This is a temporary position not to exceed 1039 hours.

This is an excepted service appointment that does not confer competitive status.

The typical season for this position is May through October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is May 2026.

This position is being filled via the Alaska Nat'l Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), local hire authority (16 USC 3198). Join the National Park Service (NPS) team at Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve as an seasonal Fish Biologist, GS-0482-09. In this role, you will be responsible for program development and implementation dealing with the management and protection of aquatic and fishery resources and their habitat requirements. This position directly supports the NPS mission to preserve natural and cultural resources while providing for their enjoyment by current and future generations. Major duties include:

  • Implementing scientific protocols to evaluate and conduct monitoring of marine and freshwater fish populations and fisheries stocks.
  • Conducting inventories to determine species distribution, composition, and relative abundance; catch and harvest in recreational, commercial, or subsistence fisheries; and overall patterns of angler use and distribution.
  • Performing data entry, data quality control, and basic analyses to generate fish/fisheries reporting metrics.
  • Preparing scientific reports on fisheries inventory, monitoring, and research activities.
  • Working with supervisors in writing reports and revising monitoring protocols and study plans.
  • Assisting with coordinating fish management strategies and programs with those on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad ecosystem protection strategies and minimizing human impacts.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

  • Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Areas considered "near" Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is the area within the State of Alaska that extends from Dixon Entrance on the south to Icy Bay on the north. (See map of local hire geographic area.)

The following are the competencies identified for this position. Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document, but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies:

  • Possesses expertise in fish biology, including taxonomy, population dynamics, ecosystem interactions, and conservation, and collaborates with park managers on long-term fish monitoring.
  • Provides technical and scientific advice on fish populations and aquatic ecosystems, and conducts peer reviews of related reports and publications.
  • Develops and implements data collection protocols for monitoring fish populations and aquatic resources, and manages fisheries databases for data entry, analysis, and reporting.
  • Conducts fisheries monitoring in remote areas, ensuring safety protocols are followed during fieldwork accessed by research vessels or on foot.
  • Required to operation and crew small research vessels in a marine environment.
  • Fosters collaborative relationships with supervisors, peers, organizations, and stakeholders, while working with park rangers and outreach specialists to develop educational materials on fish and fisheries research for visitors and the community.
  • Writes resource briefs, data reports, and technical publications to summarize research and fisheries monitoring results for various audiences.
  • Produces educational and outreach materials and delivers oral presentations to diverse audiences, including co-workers, parks, organizations, visitors, and the public.

Education

There is no substitution of education for the required special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof as outlined in this announcement.

Additional information

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.

Selectee may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds). Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of ime.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep rocky terrain, arctic environments, and forests. Flying in fixed and rotary wing aircraft may be required.
