Duties

  • These positions serve as a Archeological Technician for the Color Country, Green River and West Desert Districts.
  • Prepare information such as reports, maps, and photographs.
  • Plan and carry out non-complex cultural resource field inventories.
  • Compile, summarize and interpret data obtained during inventories.
  • Assist with on-the ground field studies.
  • Identify and package artifacts to be removed from the site.
  • Participate in cultural resource inventories to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources.
  • Prepare description of artifacts found.
  • Determine inventory methods to use, identify area to be inventoried and schedule inventory.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience:
Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity. Examples of specialized experience include: assisting in gathering cultural site inventory; preparing reports, maps, and photographs for submission to team members; assembling site data in a logical sequence for review; assisting in monitoring cultural resources.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to archeology.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.

To qualify at the GS-06 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity. Examples of specialized experience include: working with a professional archeologist, planning and carrying out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources and writing reports based on findings; and applying and adapting a wide range of established data analysis methods to fit a variety of circumstances.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed (1) one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of an Archeology Technician.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.

To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized work experience at or equivalent to GS-06 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity. Examples of specialized experience include: conducting archaeological field surveys; performing searches for archaeological features and artifacts and recording survey results through field notes, site maps, or photographs; and/or conducting independent excavation and testing of archaeological sites. You must include hours per week worked.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed (1) one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of an Archeology Technician.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme, adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Education

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
