Duties

Help
  • Serve as Lead Firefighter (paramedic) responsible for assuring that the work performed by six other employees in the Branch are in accordance with supervisory instructions.
  • Incumbent responds to accidents and other emergencies involving injury, illnesses, hazardous environments, and other unknowns.
  • Determines scene safety, makes an assessment of the patient's condition and selects from a variety of Advanced Life Support Protocols. Provides treatment as prescribed in protocol, modifies the protocol, as necessary, within prescribed limits.
  • Drives and operates fire department vehicles of significant complexity to include firefighting equipment (Fire Engines, Aerial Ladder, ALS Ambulance, Hazardous Materials Response unit, Support equipment, Rescue boats and forklifts as required.
  • Provides on-the-job training to new employees and re-occurring training to all employees, EMT instructor training to instructors in accordance with established procedures, policies, SOPs, etc.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R (Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program) and must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Incumbent is subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Incumbent must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Incumbent must wear uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Incumbent is required to report for duty during Natural Disasters and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief. Employee must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations.
  • An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required as well as Emergency Vehicle Operators certification to operate all vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division.
  • Designated Key Position - This position has been identified as being a Key Position under the provisions of AR 690-11, Mobilization Planning and Management.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience GS-9: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) implementing or providing training in established medical techniques, methods, and/or equipment for stabilizing patients for transport; and 2) responding to fire and medical emergencies, providing patients with advanced life support treatment to include performing electrocardiograms (EKG), starting intravenous fluids, and resuscitation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
