This position is being filled via the Alaska Nat'l Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), local hire authority (16 USC 3198).
Any U.S. Citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Glacier Bay Nat'l Park & Preserve, by reason of having lived or worked in or near the unit may apply. To be eligible your resume must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration (see qualifications section).
This position is located in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in the Resources Division.
Duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
Conducts research and monitoring of wildlife, effects of park and visitor activities on wildlife, and evaluating and meeting the park's need for information to make intelligent wildlife management decisions.
Conducts backpack, kayak and motor vessel-based field data collection for terrestrial wildlife and plant programs.
Maintains, cleans and organizes field and office gear.
Assists with biological and physical data collection relevant to the terrestrial ecosystems of Southeast Alaska. Takes accurate and thorough field notes about animal behavioral observation.
Operates GPS units, data collection phones, and uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Program R and ArcGIS.
Conducts front country and backcountry patrols to assess the presence of bears and other wildlife in high visitor use areas and identify and document inappropriate food storage or other breaches of good bear management practices.
Enters bear-human interaction data into database, conducts data analysis, and drafts reports.
Participates in outreach concerning wildlife and wilderness management to park employees, researchers, visitors and the local tribes and communities.
Communicates technical knowledge and results to a variety of audiences, through co-authorship of technical publications, including report and journal articles, presentations to technical or non-technical audiences.
Provide research findings, wildlife natural history and safety information to the public, commercial services operators, local communities and tribes, and researchers.

You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of wildlife biology to conduct natural resource monitoring, research and management activities.

Additional information
A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying of heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep rocky terrain, arctic environments, and forests. Flying in fixed and rotary wing aircraft is possible.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for occasional/situational telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with prior supervisory approval.
