Summary

Journeyman electrician in the Maintenance Operations Section of Facilities Management and is required to perform maintenance and installation of electrical equipment and systems throughout the Cheyenne VAMC. The incumbent works with new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.

This position is maintenance, repair and management of extensive electrical systems, equipment and electrical line-operated devices located throughout the medical center.

Duties

Help

Major duties included but not limited to:

  • Installs, maintains, modifies and repairs electric wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels and outlet boxes, as well as a wide variety of electrical fixtures, tools and appliances.
  • Inspects, maintains, clean, repairs, tests and adjusts electrical buzzer and bell circuits, light sockets, lighting fixtures, fans, switches, heating appliances, grinder and shop equipment.
  • Tests circuits and equipment by use of a voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter, megger and ohmmeter.
  • Measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles and installs conduits, inserting, splicing and connecting wires to fixtures, outlets, switches, receptacles and power sources.
  • Performs maintenance and repair of electrical switchgear, remote controls, circuit breakers, panel boards, outlets for various types of electrical equipment, light fixtures, etc
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment such as emergency generators and automatic transfer switches and controls (digital and analog).
  • Installs conduit for wall outlets, light fixtures, various electrical fittings, wire splices, telephone outlets, electrical panel boards and junction boxes, pulls wires and actively maintenance of all electrical equipment.
  • According to available data, correctly analyzes electrical equipment, determining probable causes and locations of device problems and troubleshoots to properly discover specific malfunction causes.
  • Makes repairs to malfunctioning equipment, ensuring that VA accepted repair practices are utilized.
  • Communicates on a daily basis with Electric Shop Supervisor and staff concerning repairs to be made.
  • Uses the proper equipment to do repair and alteration work and operates all tools following accepted procedures, to maintain personal safety and safety of others at all times.
  • Performs work assignments and jobs in a thorough, neat and complete manner and in compliance with the National Electrical Code, as well as federal, state and local codes and regulations applicable trade standards.
  • Performs basic trouble shooting and minor repair of traction and hydraulic elevators and contacts supervisor if elevator service company is to be called in.
  • In emergency situations is required to repair and maintain elevators in operating condition.
  • Minor repairs and troubleshooting in the plumbing, carpentry, structural, and mechanical trades, in response to service calls; functioning as a Plant Operator, operating the system, and updating logs on building service equipment (to include HVAC maintenance and repair and troubleshooting and repair of electric/electronic pneumatic controllers).
  • All employees shall possess the knowledge and skills required to effectively implement the GEMS.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints, sketches, drawings and instructions; knowledge of techniques for estimating and measurement involving fractions, decimals, linear and angular systems and elementary principles of shop mathematics.
  • Works independently with minimal or no supervision thru the Electric Shop Supervisor who assigns work orally or through work orders and sketches.
  • Guides and gives advice to the lower graded worker or trainee who will occasionally be assigned to work with during the shift
  • Maintains professional manner, is courteous in communication with patients, family members, visitors, fellow employees and employees from other Services.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • In the performance of duties and assignments, incumbent must bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Incumbent frequently lifts, carries and sets up heavy parts and equipment. Incumbent could be subject to noise, odors and fumes.
  • Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolds and platforms often in hard to reach, confined spaces requiring frequent standing, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, stretching, etc. Frequent lifting/carrying of tools, equipment, materials weighing up to 50 lbs. Occasional lifting/carrying of items weighing over 50 lbs.
Working Conditions:
  • Is subject to burns, cuts, bruises, falls and exposure to a variety of weather conditions when working outside. The incumbent must be aware of safety hazards and take proper action to avoid them.
  • Incumbent uses protective clothing and safety equipment when required. Incumbent must on occasions, work in and around patients areas with various health conditions and hazard exposures.
  • Work is performed inside and outside and is occasionally dirty and greasy. Occasionally, exposed to the possibility of electrical shock and burns.
