Duties

Help
  • You will conduct Safety and Occupational Health surveys to evaluate the safety programs for risks or hazards in workplaces, facilities and operations (e.g., industrial, warehouse, maintenance, range, tactical safety).
  • You will analyze new and existing processes, products, or facilities to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards.
  • You will advise leadership on work hazard analysis, environmental issues, system safety regulations, occupational health, and administrative safety matters to improve operations.
  • You will draft reports on mishap investigations resulting in damage to property, equipment, or occupational illness to personnel explaining identifies causes and preventative actions.
  • You will conduct risk assessment to identify and eliminate unsafe operations affecting military readiness programs.
  • You will conduct on-site surveys to identify environmental regulation violations and recommend corrective actions.
  • You will develop lesson plans for required safety and occupational health topics and present training to an open audience greater than 100.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a non-sensitive background requirement.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current Medical Certification (MEDCERT) associated with Materials Handling Training (MHE) and certifications associated with confined space, respiratory protection, and hazardous materials.
  • You must receive a minimum of eight continuing education units (CEU) or equivalent per year.
  • Must be able to obtain and/or maintain a valid state driver's license. Will be required to operate a government motor vehicle when conducting site visits away from Headquarters.
  • Must be able to provide SME advice, guidance and presentations to a population that includes general officers and SES.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Must lift over 50lbs and is required to monitor under the medical surveillance program due to workplace exposures and training requirements.
  • Must be willing and able to be exposed to high noise levels and vision hazards and able to perform work both indoors and outdoors and on occasion, a field environment.
  • Must be willing and able to perform work covering a wide range of work operations and environmental conditions involving a vast range of hazards.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • Must be willing and able to perform occasional walking, climbing, lifting, operation of equipment and standing while conducting onsite evaluations or during platform instructions exceeding 30 hours during a single work week.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Administering and managing a multitude of state-of-the-art safety and occupational health management concepts, principles, and techniques.

In lieu of specialized experience, applicants may qualify for this position based on the following:

Education
Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

or

3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree

or

LL.M., if related
