Help

The Maintenance Mechanic (Construction Crew) installs, renovates, removes electrical systems incident to the construction or renovation of medical buildings, offices, or shops. The work involves removing, installing, modifying, renovating, inspecting, testing, and maintaining electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, example, test lamps, voltage testers, ammeters, and polarity testers. Completes needed renovations to installed systems, and rearrange and hook up items, such as outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, pillow speakers, patient stations, patient TVs, and circuit breakers.

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Working from blueprints, performs work using own judgment and decisions to plan, layout, route, and install/repair sewage, water, oil and gas distribution systems, bathroom fixtures, sprinkler systems OR high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems (such as hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam-heating, and steam-generating systems).
  • Framing walls
  • Installing doors and windows
  • Framing and installing sheetrock ceilings
  • Installing acoustical drop ceilings
  • Laying out and installing various types of flooring, including:
    • Carpet
    • Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT)
    • Epoxy flooring
  • Installs equipment, such as water heaters and disposal units.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains piping systems and their component parts as it relates to plumbing.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains piping systems and their component parts as it relates to electricity.
  • Troubleshoots and determines operating tools and equipment needed to perform maintenance, affect repairs, or make modifications.
  • Evaluates equipment, material and parts needed for installations.
  • Interprets and applies formulas basic to the trade to figure such things as voltage and resistance.

Physical Requirements: Works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. Frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching and arm movement. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds. May occasionally lift heavier items with assistance.

Working Conditions: Work both in and outdoors and in crawlspaces. Frequently exposed to drafts changing temperatures, dust, grease, heat, fumes and noise. Work in bad weather, in mud or snow and in wet or icy areas. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, and bruises. Follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, respirators, gloves, eye protection, and hard toed shoes.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
