This is a temporary position not to exceed 1039 hours.

This is an excepted service appointment, that remains in the excepted service indefinitely. These positions do not confer competitive status.

The typical seasonal EOD period for this position is November through April, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: early to mid-December 2025.

This position is being filled via the Alaska Nat'l Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), local hire authority (16 USC 3198). Any U.S. Citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Glacier Bay Nat'l Park & Preserve, by reason of having lived or worked in or near the unit may apply. Duties

This position is located in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in the Maintenance Division.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Incumbent will perform maintenance and construction of ordinary wood framed structures.
  • Incumbent will use intermediate carpentry skills to cut, construct, install, repair, and modify wood, composite, and wood substitute items where specific fit and accuracy are within allowable limits to produce a serviceable product.
  • Incumbent may perform work in or related to roofing, painting, cement finishing, flooring, drywalling, laboring and custodial.
  • As a member of a park organization's facility management/maintenance program, the incumbent is required to adhere to all applicable carpentry requirements and standards.
  • Incumbent will work from oral and written instructions and blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, maintenance and repair manuals, historic preservation standards and building codes.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to five nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • You must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and may be expected to lift and/or carry items exceeding 50 pounds.

Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required. Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

The following are the competencies identified for this position. Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies.

  1. Skill and knowledge of carpentry in order to help construct, alter, maintain, and repair wooden buildings, structures, cabins, docks, boardwalks, bridges, floors, decks, handrails, fences, signs, partitions, panels, and/or other items made of wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials.
  2. Ability to perform standard painting duties to clearly established guidelines and instruction.
  3. Intermediate skill in the use of hand tools and portable power tools such as hammers, mallets, handsaws, chisels, planes, shavers, routers, rasps, files, marking tools, tape measures, dividers, squares, levels, rulers, calipers, wrenches, screwdrivers, clamps, power drills, power nailers, glue guns, metal shears, screw guns, power saws (table, circular, miter, reciprocating, jigsaw, band, radial arm), and power sanders and planes.
  4. Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and remove portions of walls, partitions, or other similar structures.
  5. Ability to safely construct and erect ladders, platforms, scaffolds, stages, gangways, etc.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid.

Physical Demands: Duties require the incumbent to sit, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, work in uncomfortable positions, and possibly walk over rough, uneven terrain. The incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing, gloves, face shields, and/or a respirator that may be uncomfortable; and the incumbent is likely to work from ladders, scaffolds, rooftops, and/or elevated platforms. The incumbent is expected to be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and may be expected to lift and/or carry items exceeding 50 pounds in weight.

Working Conditions: Work is typically performed in both indoor workshops and outdoor work sites. Work outside may be subject to extreme weather conditions, with wind, rain, snow, and ice in temperatures ranging from below 0 to over 100 degrees. Depending on the geography of the park unit assigned, work may take place in elevations ranging from sea level up to 10,000 feet. The incumbent is exposed to sawdust, noise, fumes, vibration, cuts, and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment, and may occasionally be exposed to hazardous materials that can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation and burns, as well as microbiological organisms and potentially hazardous wildlife. The incumbent is expected to wear personal protective equipment as required and comply with all safety and occupational health requirements.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.
