Summary

This position is located in the Maintenance Division of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department in the Metro Area of the Commander Navy Region Southwest (CNRSW). The primary purpose of this position is to install, repair, and maintain the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment for facilities in the MWR Department Mtreo Region.

Duties

Help

  • Performs the full range of work involved in the repair, overhaul, maintenance, and servicing of industrial and domestic reach- in and walk-in refrigerators; cold storage and cold room equipment; freezers, water coolers, dehumidifiers, air conditioning units and systems, and related equipment. Provides instructions, directions and reviews work of one regular full time Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, NA-5306-08
  • Diagnoses and locates malfunctions, disassembles, repairs, replaces, and/or adjust thermostats, pressure stats, humistats, relays, switches and other automatic control devices; dissembles and repair compressors and related components; services and repairs evaporators, condensers, and receivers; repacks valves, replaces electric motors, belts and pulleys, lubricates moving parts, replaces and/or clean filters; bleeds systems and replaces refrigerants; tests for leaks and for excessive load conditions; reconditions, modifies and fabricate parts. Also, installs and relocates equipment.
  • Updates facilities by painting, refinishing, repairing walls, ceiling, furniture and floors, both wooden or tile. Measures, cuts and assembles materials using nails, staples, dowel pins and glue. Assists in replacing glass, locks, doors, windows, etc., by cutting sawing, drilling, fitting and sealing.
  • Operates a motor vehicle in getting to and from assignments. Checks vehicle for proper maintenance/ safety checks, such as and oil change and brakes are in proper order etc. Secures vehicle in designated area at end of day.
  • Cleans all work areas and other assigned areas. Performs preventive instructions.
  • Receives high priority and large assignment which require immediate response time.

  • Assure work is complete and within prescribed standards and instructions
  • Locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly and to reduce inoperative time to a minimum.
  • The supervisor assigns work orally and through work orders accompanied by building plans, shop sketches or blueprints
  • Determines the proper kind and type of parts and equipment needed, with little checking during the progress of the assignment.
  • Completed work is checked to insure that it meets accepted practices.

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License up to 1 ton
  • Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of the systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places.
  • Stoops, stretches, bends and kneels for long periods of time
  • Work is performed inside and occasionally outside, frequently in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is usually adequately heated and ventilated.
  • Work is frequently dirty and greasy, variable temperatures occur when working in cold storage rooms; is subject to possible injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns, electrical shock, possible respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gases

Qualifications

Four years of general experience in the field of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration repairs is desired. EPA certified, CAT I,II, and III.

Ability to read/interpret wiring and blueprints. Ability to communicate effectively with others. Have ability to use hand tools such as hammers, saws, wrenches, etc. Must have knowledge of refrigeration cycle of a commercial and industrial system to locate and checks elements such as low side and high side pressure, the temperature of the cooling units, the temperatures of the liquid and suction lines; and the running time of the various mechanisms.

Must know the principles and theories of air conditioning and refirgeration; such as refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, the use of refrigerant tables, how to calculate airflow, and the pressure- temperature characterisitcs for the different systems in order to locate and repair faulty equipemtn
