Duties

Help

The primary purpose of this position is: To serve as Secretary of Joint Staff (SJS) of Special Operations Command North (SOCNORTH) Command Group, responsible for coordinating administrative function of the Command Group and managing special projects for the command Chief of Staff (COS).

  • Serves as the principal staff officer to the Chief of Staff and staff officers of SOCNORTH on both technical and administrative matters relating to the accomplishment, coordination and disposition of a variety of substantive staff actions and assignments.
  • Manages and leads the function of the Commander's administrative staff and organizes activities for the SOCNORTH Chief of Staff (COS).
  • Provides oversight of Protocol functions for SOCNORTH to include assuring that the SOCNORTH Protocol Program is developed, maintained, and executed.
  • Assures that Command Group internal systems and procedures for carrying out its functions meet the requirements of balancing costs, benefits, productivity, and effectiveness.
  • Employee is responsible to ensure the core classified national information protection security disciplines of information are fully covered from a policy and programming viewpoint and ensures overall information protection requirements meet mission requirements.

  • This is a Term position NTE 30 November MONTH 2028; the individual selected for this position may be extended without further competition. Current Federal civilian employees may apply for this position using "Reinstatement" eligibility and if selected, a break in service of at least 4 calendar days may be required prior to appointment to this position.
  • This position is designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. The employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management positions series, 0301.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. My experience includes Expert knowledge of commands views sufficient to respond to inquiries concerning activities of the organization and the ability to apply management and organizational principles and practices to provide direction, guidance, and assistance to the headquarters staff; Extensive knowledge of the policies, organizations, and missions, roles, and functions of SOCNORTH and joint services to carry out the assigned administrative and management planning functions; Knowledge of SOCNORTH view and mission sufficient to respond to inquiries concerning activities of the organization; ability to apply management and organizational principles and practices to provide direction, guidance, and assistance.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-inĀ­-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of the duties, priorities, commitments, policies and program goals of SOCNORTH staff (a sub unified joint staff) sufficient to perform assignments such as assigning taskings in TMT, reviewing publications, directives and other materials which may affect SOCNORTH and independently taking appropriate follow-up actions; and to anticipate and prepare materials the supervisor needs to meetings and conferences or in order to respond to correspondence or phone calls.
  • Knowledge of military and civilian administrative/staffing processes, and demonstrated ability to lead a staff section responsible for primary administrative and budgetary support to the SOCNORTH COS.
  • Knowledge of the Defense Travel System (DTS) and rules/law concerning approval of expenditures of funds as a required of a travel Approving Official.
  • Skill and ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, clearly, concisely, and with technical accuracy.
  • Skill and ability to prepare and staff Military Staffing products (e.g. plans, briefings, information papers and messages) at a MAJCOM equivalent organization using the Military Decision-Making Process.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
