Summary

This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The position, generally aligned under to the Housekeeping Supervisor, is responsible for supporting and performing tasks (e.g., environment of care, textile distribution and training) associated with the Environmental Management Services (EMS) goals and objectives. The position has no formal disciplinary authority over staff in the execution of daily tasks.

The Housekeeping Aid Lead is responsible for leading and overseeing the duties of Housekeeping Aids in the performance of housekeeping related services in the various areas of the medical center.Major duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with the delegation of duties on a daily and a project-by-project basis;
  • Coordinating work with supervisors of other services within the positions area of jurisdiction so as not to interrupt patient care or other activities;
  • Cleaning all patient areas and corridor spaces throughout the medical center, operating rooms, and all other areas as assigned;
  • Planning and scheduling daily and weekly assignments, taking into consideration the availability of personnel and equipment to meet established priorities;
  • Determining the equipment and cleaning materials needed for each job;
  • Training staff to ensure the use of patient centered care principles in terms of customer service to patients, family members, and personnel;
  • Providing on-the job training for co-workers and new employees;
  • Keepings subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures and uses of equipment and supplies;
  • Ensuring all safety regulations and procedures are observed and may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues;
  • Inspecting assigned areas to assure the timely accomplishment of employee assignments, sanitation levels are maintained, equipment properly cared for and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner;
  • Clean areas to include, but not limited to horizontal and vertical surfaces in: outpatient surgery, outpatient clinics, central sterile, clean rooms, patient areas, laboratory, pharmacy, offices, support and patient areas, isolation rooms, storage rooms, corridors, stairwells, toilet rooms, shower rooms, and all other Medical center areas as required.
  • Use proper procedures in dust mopping, damp mopping, emptying waste receptacles, emptying and replacing medical waste receptacle, washing walls, cleaning light fixtures, and surfaces as necessary, refilling toilet tissue, paper towels and soap dispensers.
  • Scrubs, strips, refinishes, and polishes floors by using hand operated and industrial equipment.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles and practices related to the day-to-day operations of housekeeping within a healthcare setting and the ability to apply this knowledge to solve unique problems arising in the VHA healthcare delivery systems.
  • Assists in planning, developing and implementing comprehensive plans to meet and/or exceed EMS-related customer needs in compliance with local policies, OSHA, The Joint Commission, Infection Prevention, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), VA and Environmental Program Service (EPS).
  • Knowledge and experience in communicating, educating, training, facilitating nd maintaining cohesive and functional cross-disciplinary teams to support all stakeholders. Skilled in planning, organizing and directing housekeeping and linen work teams to accomplish EMS requirements.
  • Assists the Housekeeping Supervisor to accomplish a vast array of service tasks and has the authority to accomplish day to day operational requirements.
  • Works directly with EMS staff and ensures they operates as an effective working unit by routinely rounding and interacting to create a culture of positive employee engagement with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Coordinates with customers to meet obligations. Assists the Housekeeping Supervisor.
  • Inspects and monitors standards of quality and quantity of services to provide guidance and assistance to subordinates.
  • Ensures that supplies, keys, equipment and supplies are properly secured, and equipment is maintained.
  • Performing related duties as required.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work performed requires walking, standing, stooping, stretching, and lifting. Physical effort is required when performing housekeeping duties, operating equipment, during training sessions, or in emergency situations. Work is performed in all areas of the medical center.
