Duties

Help

- Troubleshoots a variety of HV AC/R systems to include large commercial, industrial refrigeration, air conditioning systems and supporting equipment with complex problems and extensive repairs requiring judgment to locate malfunctions.

- Installs, repairs, and maintains large commercial and industrial ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning (AC), and cooling systems with complex problems and extensive repairs. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

- Installs, modifies, overhauls, repairs, and maintains a variety of complex heating boilers and/or heating systems, single and multiple fuel power boilers, steam heating boiler systems and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Installs, modifies, overhauls, repairs, and maintains a variety of complex air compressor systems for low and high pressure applications, and associated drying equipment.

- Plans, lays out and installs a variety of large complex commercial and industrial systems and supporting equipment used to condition air in warehouses, shops, hangars, and large office buildings from electrical/electronic wiring diagrams, schematics, technical orders, blueprints, drawings, electrical/plumbing codes, and work orders.

- Performs essential and incidental electrical work to the maintenance and operation of HV AC/R and Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems. Performs preventive maintenance on HV AC/R systems and electronic control systems to include disassembly, cleaning, reassembly and assist with calibration.

  • Will be required to train/guide lower graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees.
  • The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • This is a drug test position. The employee will be subject to random drug tests.
  • This position is designated as a key position IAW AFI 36-507. Duties of this position are essential to the accomplishment of wartime/contingency operations.
  • Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available.
  • This position has a limited area of consideration to Command-wide (AETC).

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a HEATING VENTILATION AIR CONDITIONING MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration and properties of refrigerants to understand the construction and operation of a variety of large industrial and commercial refrigeration and A/C systems. Also have the ability to test, troubleshoot, calibrate or repair HV AC electric, electronic and direct digital controls (DDC) systems.
  2. Knowledge of mechanical and electromechanical principles to inspect, install, test, maintain, and repair power heating systems and associated auxiliary equipment which use natural gas or liquid propane for steam or hot water production and distribution.
  3. Knowledge of environmental, safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures; and regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation.
  4. Skill in the use of measuring instruments such as gauges, multimeters, recorders, analog/electronic displays and computer generated data to determine operational status and make necessary adjustments.
  5. Skill in dismantling, repairing, and reassembling pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers, and evaporators to include balancing, aligning, and maintaining turbines, pumps, generators; troubleshooting complex problems on large projects; and applying prescribed test procedures. Skill in using hand tools, portable power tools, and a wide variety of test equipment including special tools, such as electronic manifold gauges, acetylene torch, ammeters, electronic leak detectors, vacuum pump, flow hood and hydronic manometer.
  6. Ability to read and interpret instructions, blueprints, schematics, building diagrams, and manufacturer technical manuals to maintain difficult balances of a variety of HV AC/R controls, consisting of electrical, electronic and direct digital controls (DDC) systems.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance. Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, or cramped areas where equipment, parts, or tools are hard to reach. Work requires frequent stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions for long periods. In addition, work involves frequent movement and maneuvering of large, heavy equipment using hoists, holders, and pulleys as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas. Subject to discomfort from face masks or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to chemicals, heat, steam, noise, noxious gases, fumes, or acids. Occasionally works outside, on top of buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Subject to possible burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions, follows prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hard hats, and fire retardant gloves.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
