Duties

Help
  • Operates a flood control dam to maintain reservoir elevations in accordance with the project operations manual to maintain safe stream flows downstream which will accomplish the Flood Risk Management mission.
  • Maintains structures, buildings, roads, and grounds utilizing various trade practices and materials for safety and aesthetic value.
  • As the head dam operator responsible for the management of diverse programs including but not limited to asset management, real estate, environmental, construction management, and safety in support of project administration.
  • Conducts or directs regular and periodic inspections of dam, dike, channel, weirs, and/or levee comprising the project noting discrepancies or need for maintenance or repair services.
  • Operates diesel and gasoline powered vehicles. Maintains combustion-powered vehicles and equipment including tractors with loaders, backhoes, mowers, sidehill mowers, engines, replacing, and/or repairing defective parts, and components.
  • Uses various tools, test equipment, and measuring devices.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid, State-issued Driver's License.
  • Required to wear a Corps of Engineers uniform.
  • Must be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • A pre-employment physical is required for this position.
  • Travel of 25% or less is required in this position.
  • Position requires participation in the Department of Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program to include passing a urinalysis drug testing prior to appointment and thereafter.
  • Must lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a USACE Motorboat License.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a First Aid Certification.
  • May be required to wear safety equipment when needed.
  • Will be exposed to extreme, uncomfortable weather conditions.
  • Work environment can cause bodily injury.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. 1) Performing both routine and non-routine maintenance and repair tasks on mechanical equipment, utility systems, buildings, and/or other appurtenant structures and properties; 2) Operating diesel and gasoline powered vehicles including tractors, backhoes, and mowers; 3) Performing maintenance on combustion- powered vehicles, equipment and mechanical or hydraulic systems to include troubleshooting, replacing and/or repairing defective parts, components, and systems; 4) Utilizing a variety of tools and equipment: and 5) Managing diverse programs in support of project administration including record keeping (digital and paper), electronic time entry, procurement of supplies and services and compliance with Federal Acquisition regulations electronically and hard-copy - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires constant arm and leg movement and reaching, bending, and turning to operate hand and foot controls when driving tractor or motor vehicle. Exerts effort to maintain balance and position at controls of tractor. Stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Works on scaffolds and ladders, which require work overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Exerts heavy physical effort frequently lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds, pushing heavy loads, and operating heavy hand-held equipment.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works indoors, and outdoors in all weather conditions including periods of extreme heat and cold, and inclement weather. Subject to cuts and bruises, electric shock, and falls from ladders; injury from lifting and handling heavy materials and equipment; discomfort from noise, fumes, and vibrations of equipment; and a variety of hazards associated with operating vehicles and equipment, applying pesticides, and performing duties in the vicinity of flood control projects.
