Description of Assigned Duties:

This position is assigned to Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI), Veterans Health Indiana (VHI). The PCMHI position at this time is based at any VHI location that also provides Primary Care services but may need to provide services at other Veterans Health Indiana sites via video technology.
The PCMHI team works in a fast-paced, primary care setting. The PCMHI psychologist functions as part of the interdisciplinary primary care team, serving Veterans, Primary Care Providers, and allied Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) members. PCMHI provides services for a wide range of concerns, resolving problems within the primary care service context. PCMHI provides functional assessment and brief intervention, with the aim of population based, preventative care.
Our aim is to see Veterans the same day they see a PCP, normalizing meeting with the team psychologist as a routine primary care service. The primary goals are assisting PACT team members with identification, treatment, and management of mental health and behavioral medicine conditions in the Veteran population.

This position is designated as the PCMHI Program Manager. Duties and responsibilities in that role include, but are not limited to:

  • Operation and management of key clinical, training, and administrative aspects of the PCMHI team
  • Supervision of PCMHI staff
  • Collaboration between professions within PCMHI (e.g., psychologist, social worker, psychiatrist, pharmacist, nurse, etc.) to ensure high fidelity to PCMHI models and high-quality care
  • Collaboration with other services and clinics to ensure continuity of care across and outside of the mental health continuum of care
  • Completion of administrative tasks in support of the PCMHI team and program (e.g., timecards, writing policy, creating grids/schedules, etc.)
  • Consult management, both into and between PCMHI team
  • Hiring, disciplinary actions, and position management of direct reports
  • Collaboration with Psychiatry Service, Primary Care, and others to ensure VA's mission
  • Oversight and administrative authority over all programming in the PCMHI Section, including staff, and participation in program development, implementation, and evaluation
  • Maintaining compliance with PCMHI Checklist, to include determination of plan in cases where compliance is not met
  • Providing consultation to other Psychiatry staff, as needed
  • Representing the Medical Center at professional community group/events and committees, in conferences/meetings with higher ranking managers, supervisors, and staff from other disciplines or work units, and/or with representatives of local public interest groups, congressional district offices and employees of State and local governments
Our PCMHI staff provide education to PACT members on behavioral health issues as well as consultation on tips for successful care management, even when there is no direct patient contact. Typical shifts will match the primary care clinic's hours (e.g., 0730-1600 or 0800-1630), though occasional extended hours may be required. When properly credentialed and licensed, the incumbent will operate independently in all areas, consulting with peers and supervisors when warranted.
