Summary

The Chief Nurse Anesthetist, as a first level supervisor, assumes major administrative responsibility for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) at the Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS). The Chief CRNA will be the clinical point-of-contact in Anesthesiology Service for the Outside of the Operating Room Airway Management (OOORAM) program, and the Moderate Sedation program; s/he will work in conjunction with the Administrative Officer (AO) of the service on these programs.

Help

  • Perform pre-anesthetic evaluations, collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to prepare the anesthesia plan, delivers all forms of anesthesia, and provide intra and post-operative care of patients.
  • Provide emergency airway and resuscitation management throughout the facility and establish effective working relationships with al I levels of staff throughout the Denver VA.
  • Translate the principles of professional nurse anesthesia practice into appropriate patient care.
  • Perform the pre-anesthetic patient history and physical, including the collection of preoperative consults and data, from which an appropriate anesthetic plan is formulated with supervising Anesthesiologist. The anesthetic risks, benefits, and options are described to the patient. Under the Anesthesia Care Team model, administer inhalation, regional, intravenous, local, and topical anesthetics and continuously evaluates the patient's physical status and response to anesthesia throughout and after the procedure.
  • Provide patient care that is a abreast of changing concepts and advancements in the profession while working effectively in an interdisciplinary environment for improvement of services for patient care.
  • Practice with colleagues and peers utilizing a collaborative Anesthesia Care Team model while demonstrating effective communication skills and professional behaviors that promote cooperation and interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Respond to emergency situations by providing airway management, the administration of emergency fluids and medications using appropriate resuscitation procedures. Emergency treatment as directed by the patient's request as noted in the advance directives listed in VISTA.
  • Foster professional innovation and evidence based practice within the anesthesia department. Collaborate with the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for a CEU approved in-service program for the Department of Anesthesia. Plan and organize orientation and in-service training for anesthesia staff: and participate in guidance and educational programs throughout the medical center. Assure clinical co-ordination of student nurse anesthetists if a student program exists.

Qualifications

Advanced Practice Nurse (Certified Nurse Anesthetist) Basic Requirements

  • Education. A masters or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia. (Applicants pending the completion of educational requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until the education requirements are met.) Nursing education must be from a school of professional nursing anesthesia accredited by Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs (COA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • Licensure and Certification. The following licensure and certification requirements are considered conditions of employment.
    • License. All APN (CNAs) must maintain an active, current, full and unrestricted license to practice as a CNA or equivalent, in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
    • Basic Certification. All APN (CNAs) must maintain full and current certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) or an equivalent Nurse Anesthetist certification recognized by the COA.
  • Experience. Four years of APN (CNA) progressively responsible assignments in clinical, administrative, education and/or research related to CNA practice, one of which is specialized experience equivalent to the APN (CNA) Ill grade level. At this level, emphasis is placed on strategic planning and administrative responsibilities.
NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and an APN (CNA) assignment that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.


Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction. This position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care. This position requires considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. It requires repositioning patients, assisting with transferring patients to wheelchairs/stretchers, and transporting them to other departments or facilities.
