Duties

Help
  • Interview and screen patients, modify a variety of both standard and nonstandard diets, coordinate nutrition care activities with nursing services, and instruct patients regarding menus.
  • Perform a variety of administrative and clerical duties.
  • Assist the dietitian in nutrition screening and assessment of individual patient needs by evaluating diet history, obtaining medical information and patient tolerances and allergies from the medical record and via interview.
  • Record patient information in the medical record with the up-most accuracy and attention to detail per Nutrition Care policy.
  • Obtain diet orders from ward nurses or systems and ensure accuracy of the diet orders by communicating with nursing staff regarding diet changes and alternate tray delivery times pending the patient’s schedule.
  • Evaluate and uses information to assign each patient a nutritional risk category.
  • Conduct admission nutritional risk screening procedure on all new patients.
  • Provides dietary information both through oral and written instruction methods to patients, their significant others, and nursing staff.

  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. An employee may be required to remain in place or report for duty during inclement weather conditions or other appropriate emergency conditions.
  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • You may be required to wear Personnel Protective Equipment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes monitoring nutrition care for all patients by obtaining diet orders from medical staff or health systems; or assisting with the implementation or evaluation of nutrition care plans. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as dietetics or nutrition.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
