Summary

The Nephrology Program Manager provides assistance to the Section Chief to assist in advancing the instructional goals of the Nephrology Section and Salisbury VA system in general as determined by the Section Chief and Chief of Medicine. Administrative time will be allotted for these activities. The Nephrology Program Manager position will serve as acting Chief of the Section when Section Chief is not available. May serve as Medical Director of Dialysis Unit as the needs of the section dictate.

Administrative:
  • Participates in and attends medical center committees and/or teams as assigned by the Chief, Medicine Service and in his/her absence or absence of their respective Section Chief.
  • Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, as assigned by Chief, Medicine Service.
  • Demonstrates commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goals by the Medical Center.
  • Adheres to all information security and privacy measures set by VHA and the Medical Center.
  • Annually develops and evaluates professional and personal goals. Identifies individual professional learning needs and participates in formal programs, workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self-directed learning activities, completes facility wide mandatory education yearly.
  • Other administrative activities that may arise as the needs of the institution dictate.

Clinical:
  • Provides quality patient-centered patient care to both inpatients and outpatients for adults age 18-65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by Chief, Nephrology Section. Clinical activity includes practicing at 2 sites: a state of the art VA Health Care Center (HCC) in South Charlotte - https://www.va.gov/salisbury-health-care/locations/south-charlotte-va-clinic/- in addition to the main clinical campus in Salisbury, NC.
  • Maintains clinical privileges in the areas of his/her expertise and in all areas required to carry out the duties of his/her assignments/responsibilities within Medicine Services.
  • Some experience (or interest) in the medical management of renal transplant recipients/pre-transplant patient workup is preferred, but not mandatory, for applying for this position. Renal transplants are not performed at this institution, but there is a sizable population that requires post-transplant long term follow-up, and experience with this population would be a strong attribute for applicants to this position.
  • Experience with in home dialysis modalities, specifically peritoneal dialysis, preferred, but not mandatory, for applying for this position. This institution does not currently offer this modality, but plans are in place to start a home dialysis program (Peritoneal dialysis).
  • Demonstrate sound decision making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians. Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professionals, medical center staff, and management. Serves as staff attending for sub-specialty consult service as assigned. Participates as a peer reviewer when requested. Participates in multidisciplinary activities involving the treatment and discharge plan on patients admitted to the Medicine inpatient services.
  • Systematically evaluates patient care programs in all Medicine venues.
  • Exhibits leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and finding from research and studies. Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal.
  • Successfully integrates patient care activities on Medicine Services and other patient care programs at the medical center and in the community such as Social Work, Prosthetics, Home Based Health Care (HBHC), and private nursing homes.
  • Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi- symptomatic patients when clinical assignments so dictate.
  • Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS in a timely manner, including view alerts and encounter completion.
  • Includes patient/family/significant other/health care provider in establishing realistic, measurable goals related to health education and treatment plan and in planning care on a continuum; assists staff in the process of mutual goal setting.
  • Demonstrates skill in implementation of clinical practice guidelines and protocols for patients with complex medical care needs.
  • Documents administrative and clinical information in a thorough and accurate manner.
  • Utilizes problem solving methodologies to resolve problems that impact on patient care or staff performance.
  • Plans implements, and evaluates care based on age specific requirements of the patient.
  • Serves as a role model in assessing and evaluating patient status and identifying priority needs for care.
  • Develops the initial plan of care and updates the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a leader in developing standards of care.
  • Makes decisions based on professional standards.
  • Assesses veterans by utilizing advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills.
  • Identifies acute/non-acute/chronic health problems.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:
  • All Specialties
    • Experience in disaster medicine and/or completed advanced training (i.e. fellowship) in disaster or wilderness medicine. This may include experience in medical deployments. Additionally, training and/or experience in critical care medicine is favored.
    • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
    • Certifications from American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN) are highly preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). (AHA certification preferred.) BLS/ACLS certification is recommended, but not required, for candidates who are board certified in Emergency Medicine (VHA Directive 1177, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, January 4, 2021). The selected employee will be required to receive these certifications prior to assuming clinical responsibilities and ensure current certifications after employment is maintained.
  • Emergency Department
    • Board certified in Emergency Medicine.
    • Board certified in Family or Internal Medicine.
    • At least 5 years of recent experience in an Emergency Department.
  • Hospitalist
    • Board certified in Internal Medicine.
    • 5 or more years of clinical experience since completion of residency training.
    • Experience and/or training in critical care medicine.
  • Primary Care
    • 3 or more years of experience in a Primary Care Setting.
    • Prior experience in the hospital, emergency or trauma setting.
    • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
  1. Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
  2. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  3. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.

Program Manager provides guidance and support to the Nephrology Advanced Practice Provider(s) (APP) when assigned to do so by the Section Chief. The Nephrology Program Manager provides guidance and supervision for the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) assigned to Medicine Service/subspecialty services and clinics according to the standards outlined in Center Policy Memorandum, 11-4, "Supervision of Postgraduate Residents," when assigned to do so by the Section Chief and/or the Medicine Service as per the needs of the institution.
