Duties

Help
  • Secures cargo inside or upon conveyances which have regular, rectangular, unobstructed cargo areas.
  • Installs blocking and bracing inside or upon box cars, gondolas, flat cars, vans, trucks or other conveyances.
  • Determines necessary sizes for braces, wedges, cables, and other staying devices by measuring or estimating them before and during construction or installation.
  • Identifies and locates ammunition and components for shipment.
  • Ensures conveyances are adequate for transporting materials.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.
  • Performs duties which involve the control, accountability and shipment of arms, ammunition and explosives (AAE). Incumbent must maintain AAE Security Certification/Screening IAW AR 190-11.
  • The position duties meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Blocker and Bracer (Materials Handler) without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform common duties which include constructing and installing wooden blocks, wedges, gates, braces, and other staying devices to separate and secure crated and boxed items inside or upon box cars, flat cars, vans, trucks, or other conveyances which have level floors, straight sides, and no odd-shaped or curved overhead areas, framework, or obstacles protruding into the cargo area. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Performs heavy, strenuous, tiring work for prolonged periods. Continuously lifts, carries, and positions tools and materials weighing up to 45 pounds, and often moves or positions extremely heavy items using jacks, levers, or assistance from other workers. Work continuously involves standing, stooping, reaching, or similar physical activity. Sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions and may have to climb upon or crawl under vehicles or structures. Good color vision is necessary for the proper identification of different types of ammunition by color code.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Is exposed to danger of explosion and fire while working with explosives, chemicals, and loaded ammunition. Works both inside and outside and is frequently exposed to disagreeable heat, coldness, dampness, wind and rain. Is exposed to noise and to possible cuts, abrasions, and splinters from power sawing, handling lumber, spiking, nailing, and other work. Exposed to nose and lung irritation from dust and sawdust. To avoid injuries, may wear protective eyeglasses, a face shield, protective ear devices, gloves, hard hats, hard toe shoes, or other protective equipment.
