Duties

Help

You will work with and lead a small group of mechanics and helpers engaged in the performance of all kinds of pipefitting tasks involved in the construction, repair, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine craft and vessels and in connection with miscellaneous manufacturing projects performed at the Yard.

Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable member of the team. Typical duties include:

  • Leading and performing all kinds of pipefitting tasks including developing work from blueprints, bills of materials, sketches, and work orders.
  • Laying out, taking measurements, making templates, jigs and fixtures.
  • Fabricating, installing, modifying, repairing and testing iron, steel brass, monel, copper, copper-nickel, stainless steel, plastic pipe and tubing and a wide variety of low, medium, and high pressure hoses.
  • Working on shipboard systems such as compressed air, fuel oil and lubricating oil, salt water and fresh water cooling, boiler piping, steam lines, exhaust lines, etc.
  • Installing piping, hangers, brackets, and other supporting fixtures.
  • Establishing time limits for performing the jobs and insuring that your subordinates perform a satisfactory quantity and quality of work.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience.

Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:

1. Ability to lead;

2. Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc.;

3. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic;

4. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading);

5. Measurement and layout;

6. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment;

7. Troubleshooting
