Summary

As a Podiatrist (Rearfoot/Ankle) at the Baltimore VA Maryland Healthcare System, you may be required to provide patient care at the Community Living Center in Loch Raven and or the Glen Burnie outpatient clinic. These additional locations will not comprise the majority of your clinical schedule and are intended to support broader system needs as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Staff podiatrists are an integral part of the Surgical Service and report directly to the Chief of Podiatry on all matters relevant to the good working order of the podiatry clinics.
  2. Provide medical and surgical management of deformities and conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower extremity in outpatient, inpatient, surgical and telemedicine settings. This includes ordering, interpretation and documentation of diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical and surgical specialties.
  3. Timely completion of all relevant patient documentation including but not limited to progress notes, encounters, consults, operative reports
  4. Supervision of all personnel associated with the podiatry clinic including health care technicians, nursing and administrative staff.
  5. Supervision of podiatry residents in both outpatient, inpatient and surgical settings.
  6. Conducts inventory management to ensure that necessary instrumentation and supplies are available for the evaluation and management of patients in the podiatry clinic setting.
  7. Completes all clinical and administrative requirements for VA employment including continuing medical education, medical licensure, Basic Life Support, and Talent Management Systems.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Applicants must possess a doctor of podiatric medicine degree, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure or Registration: Applicants must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The podiatrist must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
  • Residency Training: Podiatrists must have completed residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are:
    1). Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
    2). Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
  • English Language Proficiency: Podiatrists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7402(d),7407(d).

Staff Podiatrist Surgical

Should be board qualified or board certified by a Council on Podiatric Medical Education certification board, or other equivalent certification to grant surgical privileges. The individual must possess experience to perform duties as a podiatrist and surgeon, and have completed an accredited residency, and/or possess experience to perform general and surgical duties and some specialized functions and procedures, without supervision. Staff podiatrist surgeons also includes attending physicians who train podiatrist residents, assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. These podiatrists will perform office based procedures and operating room procedures and are responsible for surgical patients 24hours a day, seven days a week. Added work responsibilities may include seeing hospital patients daily and carrying a pager or be available by phone for emergency consultations.

Physical Requirements: The work may require some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, or recurring and considerable crouching, bending, standing, stooping, stretching, or walking such as in performing regular and recurring medical activities, inspections, or to observe healthcare operations in treatment facilities. Work also includes frequent lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 23 kilograms (i.e., under 50 pounds) such as record boxes, equipment, or assisting in self-care transfer activities.
