Summary

The Health Technician (HT) is responsible for the clinical and clerical functions of veteran care in order to promote timely and efficient care. The Health Technician assist in the operation of the domiciliary living units and provides support to domiciliary residents and treatment team members.

Help

Major Duties included but not limited to:

  • Assures resident compliance with health, safety, and sanitation directives as they pertain to living quarters, treatment areas, TV rooms, multi-purpose rooms, etc.
  • Modifies and directs resident's behavior and assists in therapeutic rehabilitation programs as a member of a treatment team.
  • Manages scheduling, medical data, resident movement and ensures that all medical information from telephone calls is communicated to appropriate team member and entered into the computerized patient record system.
  • Provides administrative and technical support to the core and expanded teams and prepares program forms as needed.
  • Monitors resident's progress toward the objectives of the treatment plan that requires knowledge of the resident's needs, his/her treatment plan, and progress being made by the resident.
  • Provides care in compliance with program and regulatory guidelines (JCAHO, CARF, etc.) and VHA/Nursing Strategic Plan.
  • Knowledge of resident admission and outpatient processing eligibility and procedures.
  • Reviews admission screening information on new admissions and becomes familiar with resident history, diagnoses, psycho-social status and any special precautions.
  • Identifies behaviors or medical conditions that require intervention and treatment.
  • Resolves the resident's problem or referral is made to the appropriate staff or program.
  • Initiates administrative activities pertaining to the functioning of treatment teams, including appropriate resident/team scheduling. Ensures appropriate documentation of team activities regarding residents, preparation of overall treatment plan, and ensures that follow-up on treatment plans occurs.
  • Documents and coordinates problems toward their resolution with appropriate clinical or administrative staff. Approves/disapproves resident passes.
  • Transports veterans, specimens and supplies as needed to provide patient care.

Work Schedule: 7:00 am - 7:30 pm, including rotating weekends, holidays, and off tours

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/26/2025.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

Individual Occupational Requirement.An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for the 0640 occupational series. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, you must possess technician experience that requires application of knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. (This position is part of a series that ranges widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists.)

In addition to the IOR, applicant must also meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-06 grade level:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-5) in the normal line of progression of the occupation. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of an extensive body of rules, policies, procedures or operations that require extended training and experience to perform a wide variety of interrelated or nonstandard procedural assignments and to resolve a wide range of problems. Knowledge of medical terminology, in addition to knowledge of procedures for monitoring blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Knowledge and Ability to conduct vital sign assessments and collect specimen samples.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Employees conduct walking rounds in the building, some activities occur outside on the grounds. It also involves computer, keyboard, and telephone work. Daily activities require walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
