Duties

Help
  • Conduct complete examination of patients to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of their condition.
  • Recognize, stabilize, and treat a wide variety of medical emergencies.
  • Respond on-site to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, at times encounters situations which may be life threatening.
  • Operate an emergency or patient transport vehicle and select the most efficient route to and from the site of the emergency.
  • Set up specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, defibrillators, external cardiac compression devices, and point-of-care blood testing (cardiac panels or glucose levels).
  • Control external bleeding with direct pressure, elevation, pressure points, or tourniquets and treat shock.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of charts, reports, forms, and logs in support of emergency medical services.
  • Prioritize treatments for patient having multiple problems and employ a variety of established emergency medicine techniques, methods, and equipment to the appropriate medical facility.
  • Use a variety of light rescue tools and equipment for removal of victims/patients.
  • Administer medications by multiple routes (i.e., oral, topical, intradermal, rectal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, interosseous, nebulized, endotracheal, or intranasal mucosal atomization routes) to stabilize emergency patients.

  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • One year trial period may be required.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a government driver's license within 30 days of Entrance on Duty.
  • Initial hires may be made with a valid Kansas state EMT certification; however, they must obtain and maintain a National Registry EMT certification within 52 weeks of the date-of-hire.
  • Work is subject to rotating shifts and/or irregular tour of duty to include weekends, nights, and/or holidays.
  • The employee may be recalled to duty from scheduled time off.
  • Incumbent is required to have and maintain a current AHA Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) for Healthcare Providers certification or Red Cross equivalent dependent on installation requirements.
  • Incumbent is required to have and maintain a current AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider certification or Red Cross or Red Cross equivalent dependent on installation requirements.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience 1) evaluating medical emergencies to provide advanced life support care, 2) conducting examinations to obtain patient vital signs, 3) performing advanced airway care, 4) administering emergency medicine techniques such as CPR/First Aid and Basic Life Support, and 5) operating an emergency vehicle. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Licensure/Certification: 1. Must have at a minimum, state certification at his/her grade level and obtain certification by the National Registry of EMT's (NREMT's) within 12 months after appointment. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your licensure/certification with application).2. Must possess and maintain a Basic Cardiac Life (BLS) Support Certification, AHA Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), and AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Must be able to obtain and maintain a AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

  • The incumbent may be enrolled in a medical surveillance program and must meet the requirements outlined to support the specialty mission. A physical as well as an annual medical surveillance exam may be required. Employee may be subject to an annual respiratory fitness exam for the proper wear and usage of a protective mask.
