Duties

Help

As a SECURITY SPECIALIST at the GS-0080-11/12 some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Provides technical equipment inspection support.
  • Inspects foreign inspection equipment to determine whether the equipment meets current U.S. safety, environmental and security standards.
  • Deploys and operates state of the art security equipment systems.
  • Performs or assigns duties related to the pre-inspection planning of TEI events to include administrative requirements, security equipment maintenance, preparation, and operation of DTRA's technical security inspection equipment.
  • Identifies, prepares, packs, moves, and ships, as appropriate, TEI equipment to support deployments.
  • Responds to ad hoc requirements with little guidance and little or no established security policy. Provides briefings and presentations to DTRA and other mission training courses, outlining duties and responsibilities of the TEI Program and its application to various mission areas.
  • Represents DTRA regarding technical security and safety issues and policy interpretation at the national level.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET/SCI security clearance.

  • Travel up to 25% is required, often on short notice, CONUS/OCONUS.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid passport.
  • This position requires a Pre-Employment Physical to be performed by a licensed healthcare professional. This position may require the incumbent to lift over 50lbs, walk and/or crawl over rough terrain, bend over, and/or crawl/fit into tight spaces.
  • This position may require the incumbent to be exposed to ionizing radiation. Radiation monitoring may be required IAW DoDI 6055.08 Occupational Ionizing Radiation Protection Program to ensure compliance
  • Incumbent must possess the SPeD Security Fundamentals Professional Certification (SFPC) OR obtain the certification within 24 months of hire and maintain annual certifications thereafter.
  • Program Management and treaty related courses that are held periodically within DTRA are required as well as chemical agent safety courses.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-11 grade level, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service:

  • Deploying state-of-the-art security equipment and systems/technologies, and techniques/methodologies to analyze foreign inspection equipment;
  • Providing technical knowledge of equipment inspection procedures and policy to participate in working groups to analyze and develop solutions to treaty-related problems;
  • Monitoring security, radiation and safety of chemical agents; OR
B. You have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position.
(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.); OR

C. You have some specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and you have more than one year but less than two years of education as described in B. You have computed the percentage of the requirements that you meet, and the total is at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.)

You may qualify at the GS-12 grade level, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service:
  • Operating state-of-the-art security equipment systems using technologies and techniques and methodologies to analyze foreign inspection equipment;
  • Creating innovative technology-centric security equipment and methods designed to solve long-standing and difficult treaty-related problems;
  • Managing security, radiation and safety of chemical agents.???????

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Substitution of education may ONLY used in lieu of specialized experience for the GS-11 grade level.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Foreign education may be qualifying if a private organization specializing in interpreting foreign education programs has deemed the foreign education equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program or a U.S. accredited college or university has given full credit for the foreign courses.

Unofficial transcripts from U.S. Department of Education accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions listing your name, the name of the school, the date and degree awarded, and the list of classes and credits earned are acceptable for the application process. If selected, official transcripts are required before a firm job offer is made. A photocopy of your degree/diploma is not acceptable.

When relying on foreign education, submit transcripts and a copy of the equivalency evaluation results letter with a course-by-course listing.
