Duties

Help
  • Serves as the senior employee at the plant in the absence of the supervisor and on night, weekend, and holiday shifts and follows standard operating procedures for plant operation.
  • In the absence of management authorities, has responsibility for determining appropriate actions to be taken during abnormal conditions.
  • Records hourly reading of generator and transmission line meters, indicated loads, reactive loads, voltages, temperatures, and currents.
  • Keeps informed regarding necessity to deviate from normal operation and determines action to be taken through continuous observance of instruments and indicators in the control room and communication with system dispatchers.
  • Assists electrical and mechanical crews in the overhaul, repair, and servicing of all power plant and intake structure equipment when on maintenance tour of duty.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Power Plant Senior Controller without more than normal supervision. Incumbent must have the ability to perform common maintenance and repair duties, including operating hydroelectric power plant equipment under normal and abnormal conditions and operating flood control facilities to reduce flood risks. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work tasks require that the incumbent be capable of rapid simultaneous mental and muscular coordination in conjunction with eye and hand coordination to operate switches and controls in accordance with meter indications. In order to perform the maintenance, inspection and operation of power station equipment, the worker will lift and carry heavy objects 45 pounds and over, climb and reach above the shoulders, stand, sit, crawl and kneel for prolonged periods of time and perform repeated bending. The incumbent must be able to utilize the plant communications system, and to do so, hearing and speech is necessary. In order that color codes be recognized it is necessary for the incumbent to have correctable vision and the ability to distinguish basic shades of colors. Operation of cranes, pickups, and other motor vehicles is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The incumbent will work primarily inside around machinery in operation, in close proximity to high and low voltage circuits and climb stairs frequently. Sometimes work will be performed outside in weather of varying degrees of temperature and humidity, in tight or cramped workspaces, on ladders or scaffolds and on slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Occasionally the worker will use solvents or degreasing agents, be assigned to protracted or irregular hours of work, use both hands in water and be exposed to silica, asbestos, oil, grease, excessive noise, vibration, smoke and gas fumes. Personal protective safety devices will be supplied to the worker when in an area of hazardous exposure. Examples of devices are hard hits, safety shoes, safety goggles and glasses, fresh air breathing masks, gloves, dust and smoke respirators, earmuffs, insulated gloves and safety grounds. When in an area of hazardous exposure the appropriate personal safety device will be worn by the worker.
