Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic Leader will report directly to the Chief of Maintenance and Operations and work on special operations and maintenance projects for the Facilities Management Service (FMS) within the VA Healthcare System at the West Haven VA Connecticut Medical Center. As well as lead specially assigned teams in completing assigned projects.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited too:

  • Must have skills and knowledge of one or more of the following trades; electrical, plumbing and pipefitting, heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning.
  • Responsible for scheduling all training for shop employees and to maintain individual training records for assigned employees according to policy and procedures.
  • Must be willing to work odd hours, if required, including but not limited to weekend and shift work.
  • Will maintain and provide a current training and leave roster to the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor.
  • Works closely with all new installations, in-house projects, inspection and review of project blueprints, inspection of contractor submittals, inspection of all contracted project work and work sites, and review of new equipment and material submitted by vendors.
  • Responsible for routine tasks which include checking inventory of shop supplies and materials to ensure that proper quantity is on hand at all times; ordering needed equipment, parts and supplies to complete repairs; assigning work orders; inspection of equipment, equipment rooms, work areas and penthouses for proper maintenance, cleanliness and safety.
  • Will assume temporary supervisory responsibilities as assigned during those periods when the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor is not present (available) or on duty.
  • Will assume additional responsibilities and duties as Shop or VA Maine Medical Center needs dictate or at the discretion of the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor or Engineering Management.
  • Will assume duties and responsibilities of a Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) as required through the direction of the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor.
  • Supervisor will call on incumbent for technical information and short-term projects on an irregular basis.
  • Works independently with a minimum of supervision in determining the work assignment and practices of the Shop, within the guidelines of policy and regulation.
  • Ensure that all procedures, practices, and standards are followed by subordinates.
  • Must have (or have the ability to learn) a specific understanding of the overall electrical system and mechanical systems of the Medical Center, including the interrelationships of the various components, and must have the ability to determine the appropriate course of action (for example, how to isolate a building or fault) under extraordinary conditions.

Physical Requirements: Must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving walking, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, working overhead and crawling. Incumbent must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding. Incumbent must be able to lift loads of up to eighty (80) pounds. Frequently, work will be performed in cramped and awkward positions. Work performed is of a precise nature requiring prolonged concentration. Incumbent works at times under conditions of extreme stress and must be able to interact effectively with medical staff and perform work in a calm analytical manner.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
