Help

  • Initiate and manage patients on mechanical ventilation per established protocols (e.g., ARDS, SBT).
  • Wean patients from mechanical ventilators and transition to CPAP or BiPAP as indicated.
  • Initiate non-invasive ventilation via CPAP or BiPAP.
  • Perform complete tracheostomy care, including cleaning, replacement, and changing of components.
  • Manage speaking valves and trach tube caps per physician's orders.
  • Administer aerosolized medications and provide humidification for patients with compromised airways.
  • Transport patients from ICU to special procedures using a portable ventilator.
  • Perform sputum induction and assist in Code Blue and other airway emergencies.
  • Conduct respiratory patient assessments and administer oxygen therapy via various modalities.
  • Initiate high flow and high humidity systems. - Perform intubations (with OOORAM certification) and extubations.
  • Collect arterial blood gas specimens as requested. - Suction patients as indicated. - Document procedures in CPRS using established templates. - Position patients and perform physiotherapy and chest drainage.
  • Possess knowledge of blood gas and acid-base interpretation.
  • Develop and implement ventilator weaning plans with doctor's approval.
  • Maintain procedure logs for mechanical ventilator usage.
  • Address the respiratory needs of Spinal Cord Injury patients.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States (U.S.). Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.

Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor.

Licensure. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT.

Credential. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT

Grade Determinations:

Registered Respiratory Therapist, GS-11.

Experience, Licensure and Credential. Candidates must have:

One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level.

  • Obtain, interpret and analyze physiological specimens and data.
  • Consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality of patient care within area of specialty.
  • Manage and maintain the airway and ventilation of the patient through the use of appropriate mechanical means.
  • Assess and evaluate patients to determine and recommend intervention to develop and implement a plan of care, such as, implementing protocols, intubation, monitoring critical systems and uses advanced modes of ventilation.
  • Provide outpatient services such as home ventilators, PAP therapy, oxygen therapy and COPD care.
Hold an active license and RRT credential.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs:
  • Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes.
  • Skill in evaluating the efficacies of therapeutic modalities.
  • Skill in performing advanced airway and ventilation management.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 11. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS 11.
