Help

Major duties include, but not limited to:

  • Knowledge of direct patient care techniques including vital signs and ability to recognize
    abnormal measurements and effectively communicate findings to medical staff or RN.
  • Knowledge of direct patient care techniques including ambulating patients, infection control.
    and emergency responses, uses appropriate safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment/supply, and drug terminology and skills to identify.
  • Collect Blood samples, collect urine samples, obtain point of care blood glucose and point of
    care blood tests.
  • Works and communicates with RNs, Doctors, other medical and ancillary staff.
  • Performs specimen collection and preparation to include labeling venous blood samples and
    mucous specimens.
  • The use of computerized charting and computer systems as well as paper documentation for documentation and work accomplishment as well as continued required learning.
  • Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions, communicates and treats.
    customers in courteous, tactful and respectful manner.
  • Displays interpersonal skills, gentle tone of voice, eye contact, body language/gesture and
    choice of work which is appropriate to the helping profession.
  • Initiate CPR according to AHA standards.
  • Initiate Cardiac monitoring and obtain/recognizes EKG's.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 0730 to 1600 or 0830 to 1700

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/10/2025.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.   • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Specialized Experience for this position includes, but not limited to the ability able to obtain patient vital signs; ability to initiated cardiac monitor; performs venipuncture and collect, label and send laboratory specimens.. OR,
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have One full year of graduate education with courses related to the profession meets the requirements . OR,
  • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires the Health Technician to be mobile throughout the Emergency Department and medical center as needed, involving standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting (moderately heavy). The Health Technician should be capable of prolonged standing/walking and be physically capable of pushing equipment, wheelchairs and patient stretchers
