Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief of Operations, Library Buildings and Grounds, Tenant Services Division, Projects Branch, Painting Section. As a Painter, you will perform coating work on equipment, furnishings, and buildings;  accomplished by standard methods and special finishing techniques including graining, marbling, and mottling using coating materials prepared in common and special methods.

TOUR OF DUTY: Sunday - Thursday 7PM - 5:30 AM

The Painter Worker position require the ability to work on ladders up to 24 feet, and on man lifts and some scaffolding (lower than 30 feet).   

MAJOR DUTIES: Duties quoted at the full performance level, WG-09

Does coating work using accepted methods of the trade. Plans the materials, tools, and techniques needed for the work and completes the work with little or no advice. Determines the methods, devices, and materials that are best suited to each surface to achieve a glossy finish, grained effect, or a finish that must meet specified thickness levels or other criteria

Utilizes standard tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, graining devices, and wet and other thickness gauges. Erects and dismantles staging and scaffolding.

Repairs, caulks, sands, and prepares surfaces prior to painting.

Prepares surfaces by using metal resins and plastic compounds, obtains smooth surfaces with abrasive compounds, evens out dents, and treats with pre-coating agents. Prepares and applies coating materials using accepted trade devices.

Prepares and treats surfaces, evening out dents. Prepares and applies coating materials using accepted trade devices.

Paints building signs from stenciled outlines.

Prepares surfaces for special effects, such as filling, shaping, and leveling with metal.

Prepares surfaces for the application of coating materials various using techniques. Determines the methods, devices, and materials best suited to the surface finish. Ensures that surfaces meet smoothness, level, and shape requirements, using accepted methods. Prepares surfaces by smoothing with pumice and rottenstone; filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins; and mixing and applying pre-coating agents. Evens out dents and scars by burning-in processes.

Performs servicing and purging on tint machines.

Perform various housekeeping duties, including but not limited to, cleaning of shop spaces, emptying trash, sink cleaning, and maintaining general organization of tools and equipment.

Follows established procedures to ensure protection of carpet, floors, and wall mounted objects.

The incumbent is responsible for utilizing a thorough knowledge of and compliance with applicable AOC and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is utilized.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Using painting tools and equipment (e.g., brushes, rollers, screeds, spray guns, straight edges, trowels, viscosity testers); and
  • Using a computer to complete time and attendance and training.

For WG-08 

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision including:

  • Reading and applying directions that relate to the mixture, use and application of pre-coating agents, solvents and coating materials;
  • Using standard painting tools and equipment; and
  • Using a computer for daily reports and updates on projects and assignments

For WG-07 

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision including:

  • Assisting with preparing surfaces and supplies within residential or commercial properties; and
  • Using a computer for simple tasks including sending emails and accessing job-related information.
