Summary

This position is located at the Topeka VAMC location. The incumbent operates a variety of motor vehicles, primarily an 18 passenger bus with a wheelchair lift, a 15 passenger van, and a variety of other motor vehicles in support of medical center activities. (Those vehicles may include a 2-ton delivery truck, 4-wheel drive trucks with sander and snowplow, mowing equipment, farm type tractors and equipment that include multiple hookups and controls).

Help

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Operates a variety of motor vehicles up to and including a 18 passenger bus with wheelchair lift.
  • Observes federal, state, and local driving regulations.
  • Secures patients and other items in or on the vehicle or equipment.
  • Follow cargo loading guidelines and techniques.
  • Washes or cleans motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs first echelon maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Inspects and reports vehicle conditions.
  • Works in varied weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, sleet and snow).
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
  • Follows written protocols for tasks associated with duties of motor vehicle operator.
  • Fuels various motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Follows all infection control protocols.
  • Ensures that patient and sensitive information are appropriately protected.
  • Maintains a valid drivers licenses.
  • Understands operating limits of vehicles.
  • Acquires and maintains a working knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies, standards or procedures.
  • Communicates with internal and external customers.
  • Informs supervisor or other official of issues or problems with vehicles.
  • Follows set schedule for pick-up and delivery of patients and another cargo.
  • Assist in the warehouse with pick up, loading and unloading supplies, distribution of shipments to using services and storage locations in the medical center and other supply receiving and distribution activities.
  • Performs light cleaning of the warehouse area as necessary to ensure a safe and clean environment.
  • Safely operate hand trucks, pallet jacks, electric or gas operated forklifts, mowing equipment, farm type tractors, 2-ton trucks and 15-passenger vans.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Incumbent is exposed to inclement weather conditions that include extreme cold and hot conditions. Incumbent must have the physical ability to maneuver extremely heavy supplies and/or patients weighing up to 500 pounds. The heavier or bulky items are moved with material handling equipment or with assistance by other warehouse personnel. The work involves walking, bending, and pushing when handling supplies and equipment. Duties also require extended periods of standing, walking and exposure to weather conditions.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
