Help

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Incumbent replace defective wires, fuses and circuit breakers throughout the station to include station power distribution systems and repair of electrical fixtures and appliances as well as hospital grounds lighting.
  • Incumbent will install and make repairs to isolated power units and line isolation monitors.
  • Accomplishes electrical work on construction alterations, maintenance and repair projects and does a wide variety of electrical work to include installation of EMT, rigid and flexible conduit.
  • Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and installs electrical service entrances.
  • Knowledge of the various gauges, sizes, and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers, and other electrical devices.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, cable pliers, hydraulic benders, pipe threading machines, and a variety of test equipment.
  • Ability to maintain a variety of equipment and services: elevators, fire alarm systems, motor controls and motor control centers, electric doors, security systems, generators and other miscellaneous equipment and systems.
  • Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard to reach places.
  • Complies with all safety/fire prevention rules/regulations, using protective equipment when required and provided.
  • Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
  • Interprets and applies the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties, e. g., voltage, voltage drop and current capability in series and parallel circuits, resistance, inductance, capacitance, power factor, current flow, and temperature and length in single and multiple raceways, conduits, gutters and cable trays
  • Determines locations of existing electrical devices and service entrances and places new ones.
  • Ability to use multimeter, voltmeter, non contact voltage tester, wire strippers, linesman and needle nose pliers.
  • Maintains and is responsible for shop tools.
  • Operate, maintain, repair, and modify high voltage equipment and circuits containing high voltages.
  • Works with low to high voltages and hot in emergency situations to avoid interruption to vital electrical systems
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, trouble shoots loading and testing new and exiting systems, fixtures and equipment.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be in good physical condition to perform assigned work. Physical exertion, such as lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds1 pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes, is required. Physical efforts, such as walking, climbing, crawling and bending, and strains such as working in confining spaces or in crouching or stooping positions for extended periods of time are encountered much of the time. The incumbent is required to perform work from elevated platforms, ladders, .and/or man-lifts. Work areas may be located at extreme heights. Must have color vision, good hearing, and manual dexterity. May work in adverse weather conditions.

Working Conditions: The incumbent must often perform work under unpleasant, disagreeable, or hazardous conditions. He will normally be expected to work outdoors. On some jobs the incumbent will work in dusty, dirty, drafty, and noisy conditions. The equipment and tools used are of the nature that requires a special care and alertness to avoid injuries. Incumbent may be exposed to high temperature, steam pipes, close ventilation while working in areas such as manholes, crawlspaces and attics. Incumbent may be exposed to high voltages in the normal course of duties, as well as electric shock hazard. Incumbent will use appropriate tools and protective equipment for each task as required by policy and applicable national codes.
