Major Duties

  • Communicate and interact with physicians, allied health professionals, patients and caregivers in various interdisciplinary clinical settings as a subject matter expert to develop the pedorthic treatment plan.
  • Provide complex patient analyses in accordance with established procedures for patients with unusual conditions, multiple complex conditions and interrelated conditions.
  • Assess patients for indications/contra-indications.
  • Discuss the assessment with the physician/requesting provider for the purpose of developing the overall treatment plan with considerable influence in the development of the plan.
  • Analyze the potential use of new and emerging technologies in designing unique or innovative pedorthic devices to accommodate or treat a wide range of complex medical conditions which include unusual problems or complications.
  • Take scans and measurements for advanced devices, prepares and modifies casts for advanced devices, repairs and fabricates advanced devices and provides patient/caregiver education for advanced devices.
  • Recognize physical abnormalities, deviations and complicating conditions with potentially life-threatening implications
  • Ensure laboratory accreditation, regulation and compliance.
  • Assist with developing a budget, managing inventory and managing resources.
  • Plan the orthotics and prosthetics clinical schedule as it relates to pedorthists, fitters and technicians that they lead.
  • Assign work to other clinicians and manages the clinical activities of orthotic fitters and technicians within the pedorthic scope of practice.
  • Provide input on performance evaluations and potential disciplinary actions for employees they lead.
  • Provide or coordinates training for staff that they lead.
  • Conduct site surveys of commercial pedorthic vendors.
  • Assist with the development of short- and long-range goals in accordance with local, VISN, and VHA Central Office direction.
  • Conduct quality assurance activities.
  • Collect and analyzes data to develop reports for local and Network leadership.
  • Serve as a consultant locally and within the VISN on budgeting and changes in policy as they relate to pedorthics and the staff they lead.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

For GS-5: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-4 level AND Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.

For GS-6: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-5 level which demonstrates your ability to:
  • Independently takes scans and measurements; prepares and modifies casts and repairs and fabricates complex devices in accordance with the input of the individual providing clinical oversight.
  • Provide complex devices and delivers patient/caregiver education for them.
  • Assess simple and complex devices for quality including structural soundness, compliance with the prescription, fit and patient comfort.
  • Assist with advanced device types to include quality assurance assessment.
  • Assist with development of a follow up treatment plan for atypical conditions.
For GS-7: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-6 level which demonstrates your ability to:
  • Provide complex patient analyses in accordance with established procedures for patients with unusual conditions, multiple complex conditions and interrelated conditions.
  • Assess patients for indications/contra-indications.
  • Discuss the assessment with the physician/requesting provider for the purpose of developing the overall treatment plan with considerable influence in the development of the plan.
  • Analyze the potential use of new and emerging technologies in designing unique or innovative pedorthic devices to accommodate or treat a wide range of complex medical conditions which include unusual problems or complications.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05 to GS-07
