This position is located in the Facilities Management Service Line at the St Cloud VA Health Care System in St. Cloud, MN. This position performs as a Plumber at the journeyman level. Help

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Install, modify and repair high and low pressure piping systems only under the direction of a journeyman pipefitter.
  • Installation of new equipment or modifications to existing systems such as water heaters, disposal units and faucets may also be required.
  • Working from blueprints, perform work using one's own judgment and decisions to plan, lay out, route, and install or repair sewage, water and gas distribution systems, bathroom fixtures, and sprinkler systems.
  • Determining appropriate placement, pitch, incline, and elevation of systems and equipment.
  • Installs, modifies, and repairs systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope.
  • Determines and installs valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation of systems.
  • Installation of equipment by routing and placement of components leading to and from the equipment; complete installations by seating, hooking up, and testing the equipment.
  • Maintain existing systems and equipment using preventative maintenance procedures, trade skills, knowledge, and equipment instruction manual information.
  • Keep equipment documentation and records as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The Screen-Out element for this position is the Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision as a Journeyman level Plumber and must be thoroughly experienced. An indicator of this knowledge is a Journeyman License, schooling, certifications and/or equivalent years of hands-on experience. Knowledge of how supply, disposal, utility systems and equipment for all gaseous and fluid utilities such as water and natural gas systems, fire sprinkler equipment, and water closets, are installed and operate. Ability to plan and lay out the installation and modification of various systems and equipment; for example, the routing, openings, slant, and level of gas and water lines; and the location and arrangement of water closets, sinks, and fire sprinkler equipment. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading)

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
