Duties

Help

You will serve as an Education Specialist and be responsible for performing a variety of daily operational administrative and child development related duties in support of the center and the Director, including serving as a primary substitute teacher in the absence of a regularly scheduled lead teacher and acting for the CDC Director in the directors' and assistant directors' absence.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Assisting in the operation of a developmental program that impacts the growth and development of children from infancy to school age.
  • Preparing a variety of reports based on Coast Guard publications, relevant state regulations/requirements and local instructions.
  • Preparing Non-Appropriated Fund employees' payroll and maintaining records of leave and absences.
  • Monitoring CDC food program.
  • Monitoring and maintaining the health history records and physician reports for all children and staff, including volunteers.
  • Observing and reporting significant individual and group behaviors of children to the director and parents.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: This position has a positive Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of Specialized Experience or substitution of education for experience or combination (if applicable) in order to be found minimally qualified. Transcripts must be submitted with your application package. You MUST meet the following requirements:

EDUCATION:

  1. Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above.
AND

To qualify at the GS-07 grade level, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Examples of specialized experience are:

  • Working in group childcare or other work that demonstrated the ability to assist in the operation of a childcare center.
  • Following established childcare policies and procedures.
  • Providing input to the development and implementation of child development programs.
  • Teaching age-appropriate curriculum for children aged from 6 weeks to 5 years, and kindergarten through 5th grade.
  • Assisting with a childcare food program.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Student Loan

Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent or term position may be eligible for student loan repayment up to $10,000 (pre-tax) for one calendar year.
