Summary

Duties

Help

  • Maintains records and document actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports.
  • Demonstrates safety requirements and skill to operate a wheelchair lift and ramp, including the proper use of vehicle device restraint/lock down mechanisms to safely transport wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs and scooters.
  • Transports patient records and maintain confidentiality until transferred to appropriate medical staff upon arrival at destination.
  • Adheres to schedule and proceeds only to designated areas or hospitals.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Practices and promote safe work, driving habits and follow standard safety procedures.
  • Uses two-way radio (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations, in accordance with rules and regulations.
  • Identifies existing or potential safety hazards and promptly notify supervisor and initiate corrective action as required.
  • Practices safe driving techniques to minimize risk of accidents and collisions by anticipating potential hazards and reacting to them appropriately.
  • Transports patients to minimize disruption to ensure maximum comfort during travel.
  • Uses expertise in map reading in order to reach unfamiliar locations.
  • Uses expertise in motor vehicle mechanics and interpretation of operator's manual for assigned vehicles.
  • Performs operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels, tire pressure, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and complete inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation.
  • Operates patient transport vehicles ( e.g. emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types of transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers).


Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm or 11:30am-8:00pm, with possible weekend duty dependent on the needs of the service.

Qualifications

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE (CDL) REQUIREMENT: This position requires a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Passenger Endorsement (P). Your CDL must be clearly documented on your resume. Please do not upload a copy of your license with your application. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your CDL.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The position is required to lift heavy objects while loading and unloading cargo. The motor vehicle operator assists patients in and out of vehicles, securing mobility aids in preparation for transit. The position requires prolonged periods of driving, sometimes in times of traffic congestion, and the operator must be constantly alert and aware of his/her surroundings. Working conditions for this position are hazardous. The operator may be required to drive on steep terrain during periods of inclement weather. The operator is subjected to the stress of driving for long periods of time in heavy traffic conditions. The position requires the employee to be exposed to exhaust fumes and loud noises daily. The operator will also work outside in the elements for periods of time (i.e., rain, snow and ice and extreme heat).

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
