Duties

Help

Conduct comprehensive industrial hygiene and environmental health surveys.
Consult with command or management officials and employee representatives concerning the nature and purpose of health hazard evaluations.
Prepare reports of findings and/or telephonically or electronically transmit results of analyses to requestors.
Determine probable cause of hazards based on data collected and observations.
Analyze complex, high hazard work environments containing diverse occupational exposures such as heat, noise, solvents, toxic dust, fumes, vapors, and mist, pesticides, toxic metals, radiation, and asbestos

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:

Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

OR

Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting industrial hygiene, occupational, or environmental health surveys, producing reports of health hazards or exposures, and submitting samples for analysis. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-11.Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. This position is obligated. A term position is time-limited and may be extended to a maximum of eight years.
