Summary

The position is located in the Police Services Dispatch Center at the G. V. Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center. The Security Assistant will initiate and carry out a variety of complex duties such as monitoring and directing police officer's response to emergency and non-emergency criminal activity, security and life safety matters, radio dispatching, and sends and receives messages via the National Crime Information Center Computer Terminal.

Duties

Help

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Performs alarm and access monitoring, trace access patterns, and assign or remove user permissions.
  • Opens and secures doors remotely during routine and emergency operations.
  • Assesses on-scene behavior and determine when it is appropriate to dispatch law enforcement or other personnel to investigate.
  • Responds to alarm systems monitoring fire, access, intrusion, duress/panic, medical emergencies, psychiatric emergencies, medical assist teams, etc.
  • Performs system checks on a variety of equipment used in the dispatch center.
  • Operates a variety of communications and security equipment, such as computers, multi-frequency radios, multi-line telephone system, and other related peripherals.
  • Maintains accurate key inventory and accountability database.
  • Utilizes an electronic system to complete vehicle registration tasks and issue decals and permits as authorized by policy.
  • Monitors and receives routine and emergency calls from a variety of sources that need police, fire, medical or other emergency services.
  • Maintains contact with law enforcement units on assignment.
  • Monitors and directs responses to security and life safety communications, radio dispatches, telephone calls, and other emergency communication circuits.
  • Compiles and prepares reports related to events occurring in the operation of the police control center.
  • Performs and documents emergency callbacks when necessary.
  • Operates an established vehicle registration and visitor management program.
  • Maintains accountability of police officer badges issued and all associated logs.
  • Coordinates with various federal, state and local law enforcement officials for coordination of emergency situations.
  • Conducts equipment inventories and completes records and other logs.
  • Enters, updates, and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems and sensitive databases.
  • Utilizes state and national systems to access law enforcement information to support field operations and investigations.
  • Queries for items such as criminal histories, arrest warrants, drivers record, vehicle registration, stolen property, firearms, etc.
Work Schedule: 6:00am - 6:00pm/6:00pm - 6:00am Compressed Tour. Subject to change based on the need of the facility.

Qualifications

GS-05 grade level: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: knowledge of the laws, regulations, and guidelines related to securing personnel, facilities, and information, including the requirements for handling, transporting, and protecting classified information and proper reporting of security incidents; monitor and directs responses to security and life safety communications, radio dispatches, telephone calls, and emergency communication circuits; uses computers and computer applications to analyze and communicate information in the appropriate format; gathers, organizes, and maintains information for determining its importance and accuracy; and communicate information by variety methods. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
OR,
  • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond having successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-5 level. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons.
