The Electronics Technician is responsible for providing comprehensive technical support of nurse call system, guest Wi-Fi, video monitoring, TVs, panic alarms, temperature monitoring systems, physical security access control systems, distributed antenna systems, and associated devices that may consist of computers and network components. This support includes maintenance, preventive maintenance, calibration, inspection, installation, evaluation, and repairs. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Maintaining a variety of computerized and networked equipment and software, which is vital to Health Care System's ability to provide quality health care
  • Planning and performing scheduled and unscheduled (emergency) maintenance on equipment to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and standards
  • Seeking ways to reduce breakdowns, eliminate safety hazards, and/or enhance accuracy and reliability
  • Assisting other Electronics Technician and Engineering personnel with maintenance of complex equipment and systems
  • Selecting or designing test setups and employing them to evaluate equipment performance to ensure the validity and efficiency of operation
  • Drawing on his/her resourcefulness, or exercising some versatility in situations, which may require unconventional applications of modern computer technology
  • Performing warranty disputes, safety determinations, diagnostic or therapeutic success or failure, and expenditures of funds to replace or acquire equipment
  • Serving as a technical advisor on the principles and practices that relate to a variety of computerized and networked equipment and software, including making purchasing recommendations, participating in design and development projects, etc.
  • Instructing equipment operators in correct equipment usage and operator level preventative maintenance
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement: The following are minimum requirements for appointment as an Electronics Technician in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met.

  • Specialized Experience (GS-11): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-10). Qualifying examples of specialized experience include: (1) Work as a technician, instructor, inspector, or mechanic (civilian or military) that showed progression in theoretical and practical knowledge of electronic theory, and of the characteristics, function, operation, and capabilities of a variety of types of electronic equipment. This experience must have included the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions; or (2) Experience in developing policies, standards, and procedures for maintenance, installation, or similar functions, provided the work clearly shows that the applicant applied a specialized knowledge of the theories and principles of a variety of electronic systems or equipment. (CLEAR DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your resume must show complete information for each job entry, such as beginning and ending dates of employment, duties performed, and/or total hours worked per week.) OR,
  • Education (GS-11): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education, in a course of study that directly reflects the job-related KSAs/competencies necessary (e.g., electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology) to satisfy the minimum qualifications and perform the duties of the position. NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.   • Combination (GS-11): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above. Physical Requirements: The work is a combination of sedentary and requiring physical effort and exertion such as e.g., walking, standing, carrying light items such as manuals or briefcases, or driving or traveling by motor vehicle. Long periods of standing, bending, and stooping is also required to observe and study work operations in project construction areas/sites, confined spaces, use of scaffolding multi-stories tall, mechanical equipment rooms, and other spaces that are noisy, dirty and close quarters, and lifting of light to moderate heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds.
