Help
  • Performs initial editing and processing of files (for example: PDF, Word, Text), from Office of the Federal Register (OFR) for the Register and Congressional products.
  • Troubleshoots and effectively processes work and understands the production priorities (for example: Federal Register, Congressional Record, House and Senate Reports, Hearings and other Congressional products.)
  • Checks gallery proofs and verifies proofs returned by Proofreaders or revised by readers, making additional marks when errors are detected or when coding changes are needed to affect desired results.
  • Answers queries on gallery proofs and/or refers queries to the affected department as needed. Maintains consistency of typefaces, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation on each jacket.
  • Instructs Readers on Government Publishing Office (GPO) style and any changes insinuated by the Joint Committee on Printing not listed in the Style Manual, and/or those changes received through the Senate, House, and the OFR.
  • Advises and assists personnel assigned to the section and interprets rules and regulations for employees regarding their work.

Qualifications

To qualify for Head Deskperson, KI-4403-00, applicants must meet screen-out element (Job Element #73). If your knowledge and ability in the screen-out element is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. The screen-out element for this position is: Ability to Lead or Supervise.

Applicants must have the ability to perform and lead or supervise the following Head Deskperson duties.

  • Procedures and processes related to proofreading, copy markup, locators, SGML, and XML.
  • Familiarity with Congressional record, Federal Register, Bill Styles, House and Senate Reports, Hearings, and other Congressional products.
  • Follow both written and verbal instructions effectively to ensure accuracy, clarity, and efficiency in the proofreading and editing process.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing to respond to queries and advise personnel.
  • Train others and conduct classes on markup style, as well as any new procedures that may be implemented.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement, 07/07/2025, to be considered.

Work Life Balance:
The GPO offers Transit subsidy for commuters using public transportation (Metro Bus/Rail, MARC, VRE, etc.)

Background Investigation:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for a Suitability. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Depending on the type of background investigation required, the security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months. The agency may rescind the tentative offer, if the candidate is unable to obtain an interim clearance.
