Summary

This Medical Technician is assigned to the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS) working for Chillicothe VAMC. The Medical Technician is responsible for the proper collection of blood samples from inpatients and outpatients throughout the Medical Center. The Technician is also responsible for giving the patient proper instructions for the collection of random, clean catch and twenty-four-hour urine collections.

Help

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for collection of urine for employee drug screen testing following chain of custody procedures.
  • Responsible for all pre-analytical processes to include patient identification, selection of appropriate tubes for esoteric tests, specimen collection, labeling of samples and distributing samples to the appropriate lab departments for testing.
  • Responsible for proper identification, proper sample procurement and proper specimen labeling.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures following a sequence of complex steps approved for sample collection.
  • Draw blood from Community Living Centers residents for requested laboratory tests.
  • Adhere to safety, infection control, and standard precautions always while drawing blood.
  • Answer incoming calls for Laboratory Services. Quickly finds and relays accurate information or refers the caller to technical personnel.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe collection and processing workspace, assuming primary responsivity for ensuring adequate levels of supplies are readily available for the collection of clinical specimens.
  • Process all CBOC and Reference Laboratory specimens per strict guidelines to assure specimen integrity.
  • Verify the patient as the individual denoted on the request and labels all specimens with the patient's name, social security number, date, and time to insure proper identification.

Work Schedule: Full-Time schedule; to include four 10 hour shifts to equal a total of 40 hours per week; Monday through Sunday

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Experience: You must have at least six (6) months of general experience, and six (6) months of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. General Experience is: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. OR,
  • Education: You may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of (a) a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled? (Transcripts must be submitted at time of application).Transcripts required. OR,
  • Combination: You may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond post-high school education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Your experience must be documented, and transcripts are required.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to perform moderate lifting up to 20 lbs., straight pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking, standing for up to 4 hours, kneeling, repeated bending, use of both arms and legs. Specific visual requirements include use of both eyes, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors and shades of colors, hearing (aids permitted), clear, high cognitive function and emotional stability: ability to read ordinary type without strain. The work requires repetitive motions during computer entry, and specimen handling and processing. The demand for accuracy and timeliness in completing required testing is a responsibility which requires the ability to work under various degrees of stress.
