Summary

The Medical Supply Technician assists in the transportation of sterile and soiled RME from point of use to the decontamination, he/she will be responsible for restocking goods in different departments within the JAHVA, he/she will be assigned to perform minor assembly of peel packs and minor surgical or clinical trays.

Duties

Help

The functions and duties of the Medical Supply Technician (MST) in Sterile Processing include but are not limited to the following:

  • Pick up soiled RME from various locations in the hospital and deliver these to the decontamination room in SPS.
  • Required to scan items into their location utilizing the real-time locator system. These items will be restocked in various locations to include: clinics, Operating Room, and SPS.
  • Required to determine par levels and restock areas based on the established par levels.
  • Aware and adheres to SPS procedures, CDC guidelines, Infection Control standards and JC, AORN, IAHSCMM and AAMI.
  • Must be aware of and follow proper guidelines for work flow, air flow and people flow.
  • Perform basic peel pack assembly and labeling for sterilization.
  • Complies with all safety and procedural regulations to prevent injury and cross contamination.
  • Maintains and continuously applies, training methods in aseptic technique, handling of contaminated equipment and supplies, decontamination and sterilization procedures to prevent the spread of disease and cross infection.
  • Complies with Standard Precautions, ensures proper disposal of hazardous waste, and reports all malfunctioning equipment, uses proper equipment for the required task; follows recommended or established direction for use of decontaminator and sterilization materials and equipment.
  • Is responsible of inspecting instruments for proper functioning.
  • Decontamination of Non-critical RME in the decontamination room.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 3:30 pm to midnight, weekends and holidays as needed based on departmental needs.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g.)

English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA policy.

Experience and/or Education

Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR

Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR,

Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Certification. None.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.

GS-3 Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing - Entry Level

  • Experience or Education. None beyond the basic requirements
GS-4 Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing - Developmental Level
  • Experience. Six months experience as a MST, operating room or surgical technician or other position that demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing in a clinical setting; OR
  • Education. Two years of education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation. NOTE: Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or nursing assistants obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces, the U.S. Maritime Service, or hospitals under close medical and professional supervision, may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for up to 6 months of experience.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  1. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
  2. Basic knowledge of medical terminology in order to assemble specialty operating room/clinic instrument sets.
  3. Basic knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
  4. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Creditable Experience
  • Knowledge of Current MST Practices. To be creditable, the experience must have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) associated with MST responsibilities. Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as an MST.
  • Quality of Experience. Qualifying experience must be at a level comparable to MST experience at the next lower grade level of the position being filled.
  • Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a MST is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a MST employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service.

Preferred Experience
  • National Certification by the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) and/or by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA, formerly IAHCSMM) is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of all areas with Sterile Processing to include: decontamination, preparation and assembly, sterilization, endoscope reprocessing (if applicable), sterile storage and distribution.
The full performance level is GS-06. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-03 to GS-04.

Physical Requirements. This position may require shift work and or rotation of tour assignments. Routinely requires heavy lifting (45 lbs. and over), heavy carrying (45 lbs. and over), straight pulling and pushing (up to 8 hrs.), walking (8 hrs.), standing (8 hrs.), kneeling (8 hrs.), repeated bending (8 hrs.), both legs required, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing aid permitted, and ability to operate transportation equipment.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
