Outpatient only sites provide medical home based primary care, hiring Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Med/Peds physicians.

Critical Access Hospital sites provide ED services (Emergency Medicine preferred, with Family Medicine considered if sufficient experience), inpatient/hospitalist services (often hybrid positions with some outpatient coverage), and outpatient primary care. Outpatient positions may also assist with coverage in other areas

DUTIES AT ALL LOCATIONS: Responsible for the practice of medicine or direct service to patients as relevant to the specialty of the position, involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative, or therapeutic services. Prescribe or administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat, prevent illness, disease, or injury. Order, perform, and interpret tests and analyze records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patient's condition. Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examinations results. Experience with electronic health records is preferred. Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Note

An agency may waive the licensure requirement for research positions not involving direct patient care.

Graduate Training
Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.
  • An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below:

GS-13 - Additional Requirements:Three (3) years of graduate training (e.g., residency and/or fellowship) in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training (e.g., work experience in the specialty after residency).

GS-14 - Additional Requirements: Four (4) years of graduate training (e.g., residency and/or fellowship) in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training (e.g., work experience in the specialty after residency).

GS-15 - Additional Requirements:Five (5) years of graduate training (e.g., residency and/or fellowship) in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training (e.g., work experience in the specialty after residency).

Final Year Residents: Applications will be accepted from applicants who are in their final year of residency and expected to complete their residency training within the next 12 months. Such applicants are required to provide evidence of meeting all position requirements before they can enter on duty.

SELECTIVE FACTOR (SF): The SF is determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Applicants who do not meet a selective factor are ineligible for further consideration:
  • Board Certification or Board Eligible by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS), in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying.
  • Final year graduate training/residents are required to provide evidence of meeting this selective factor (Board Eligible or Board Certified) before they can enter on duty.
Failure to provide verification documentation may result in the withdrawal of an employment offer, up to disciplinary and/or adverse action to include termination of Federal employment.

This position has an education requirement. Additional information

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Recruitment and/or Relocation Incentives may be authorized and is subject to availability and service unit approval. If offered, you will be required to sign a one (1) or two (2) year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the service agreement will result in repayment of the incentive.
