 MAJOR DUTIES

Application of Coating Materials 

Performs coating work using accepted methods of the trade, including special finishing techniques such as marbling, mottling and graining. Plans the materials, tools and techniques needed for the work and completes the work with little or no advice. Determines the methods, devices and materials that are best suited to each surface to achieve a glossy finish, grained effect or a finish that must meet specified thickness levels or other criteria.

Utilizes standard tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, graining devices and wet and other thickness gauges. Erects and dismantles staging and scaffolding.

Refinishes metal cabinets by matching colors with established office furniture. Prepares surfaces by using metal resins and plastic compounds, obtains smooth surfaces with abrasive compounds, evens out dents and treats with pre-coating agents. Prepares and applies coating materials using accepted trade devices.

Refinishes doors, baseboards, floors and interior trim in each of the offices. Prepares surfaces, obtains smooth surfaces, evens out dents and treats surfaces. Prepares and applies coating materials using accepted trade devices.       

Applies decorative finishes including striping, stippling and graining. Matches colors, shading and textures of interior finishes where exact matching with previous finish is required.

Paints interior and exterior building signs from stenciled outlines.

Cuts and installs glass in windows and picture frames.

Preps surfaces for special effects, such as filling, shaping and leveling with metal and synthetic resins.

Applies special finishing techniques, such as marbling, mottling and/or graining.

Preparation of Surfaces for Coating

Prepares surfaces for the application of coating materials using techniques such as abrasive blasting. Determines the methods, techniques, devices and materials best suited to the surface finish. For example, determines the methods and materials to use on different types of surfaces in preparation for a glossy finish or grained effect.

Ensures that surfaces meet smoothness, level and shape requirements, using accepted methods and techniques. Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice and rottenstone; filling, shaping and leveling with metal and synthetic resins; and mixing and applying pre-coating agents such as picking and alkali compounds. Evens out dents out dents and scars by burning-in processes.

Uses standard tools and equipment such as scrapers, putty knives, wire brushes, sandpaper, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers and thickness gauges. Performs refinishing work or assists sandblasters in preparing surfaces. Erects and dismantles staging and scaffolding.

Prepared surfaces for special effects, such as filling, shaping and leveling with metal and synthetic resins.

The incumbent is responsible for utilizing a thorough knowledge of and compliance with applicable AOC and OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is utilized.

Performs other duties as required.

The positions require the ability to work on ladders up to 24 feet, and on man lifts and some scaffolding (lower than 30 feet).

  • Ability to tint, tone and blend coating materials.
  • Skill in marbling, mottling and graining techniques.
  • Ability to read and apply directions that relate to the mixture, use and application of coating materials, solvents and pre-coating agents.
  • Skill in the use to tools/equipment (e.g. brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers).
  • Knowledge of hazardous (e.g. lead paint and solvents) and universal (e.g. lamps and batteries) waste management requirements to ensure compliance with environmental regulations in performance of duties (e.g. decide hazardous material is no longer needed and will be disposed, select containers for waste accumulation, add waste to containers, label containers, move waste to and from waste accumulation sites, manage waste accumulation sites).

Responsibility

  • The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Painter-Finisher Supervisor who assigns work orally or through work orders and furnishes general instructions when the work is of an unusual nature.
  • The incumbent selects the methods, techniques, materials and devices best suited to meet smoothness, level and shape requirements of decorative surfaces. 

Physical Effort

  • Prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions is required.
  • Frequently lifts, carries and sets up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally, handles materials and equipment weighing 45 pounds and over.

Working Conditions

  • Frequently exposed to eye, skin, nose and lung irritation from glue, bonding materials and paint. 
  • Exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, bruises, broken bones and serious injuries.
  • Follows numerous safety practices and wears or uses various protective devices.
