Summary

This position serves as a Laundry Worker assigned to the VA Reno, Nevada Health Care System located in Reno, Nevada and is part of the Veterans Health Administration. The Laundry (linen) Worker is a part of the Textile Care Unit of the Environmental Management Service (EMS). This position is responsible for performing all textile duties and tasks as assigned to provide clean and disinfected linens to all areas within the health care system.

Help

The Laundry Worker performs accurately and efficiently loading and unloading linen carts, utilizing linen that has been in storage the longest. The incumbent must exercise caution when moving up to 1000 pound carts, around corner, through narrow hallways and congested patient areas, up an down ramps, constantly aware of possible hazards to patients, staff and visitors.

The Laundry Worker must utilize proper technique in distributing and picking up linen to prevent cross contamination.

This position must keep accurate records of uniforms, linen, pillows, cubicle and shower curtains, slings, and linen that is salvaged, in storage and circulation.

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:- Processing delivering, issuing, pickup, and storage of linen and employee uniforms.- Fills linen carts with required amounts of linen in accordance with established quotas and adjusts quotas when appropriate.- Counts incoming linen and reports discrepancies to appropriate supervisor.- Maintains uniform records. - Issues uniforms to new employees.- Stamps uniforms and various garments using various types of heat press machines.- Required to maintain a current state of Nevada driver license.- Responsible for collection, record safekeeping and delivery of patent effects.- Keeps work area, linen carts and bins in a clean, sanitary condition..

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Required to push and/or pull heavy racks or carts of linen on rollers in the linen room and throughout the Medical Center. Required to be on his/her feet the majority of the time, and must be able to bend, squat, lift, and climb ladders. Most of the jobs require workers to frequently lift bundles weighing 25 pounds; however, in receiving and shipping, occasional lifting of bulk bundles weighing over 50 pounds required. Incumbents must possess a certain amount of quickness in hand and arm movements to meet production standards.

The incumbent's job requires continuous body and arm movement, walking, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting bulk lots of linen weighing up to 50 pounds. The incumbent pushes, pulls and guides wheeled linen carts weighing up to 1000 pounds as a normal part of the duties performed. Incumbent will perform work on concrete floors. Must always be safety conscious, especially to pedestrian traffic while moving linen carts.

Follows all Medical Center safety and traffic regulations. Pays particular attention to broken equipment, slippery floors, safety and fire hazards. Immediately reports hazards/malfunctions to supervisor.

Performs majority of work indoors but is occasionally subjected to inclement weather when driving to outlying clinics. Is exposed to heat, humidity, noise, bacteria and odors. There is a possibility of bodily injury through slipping on wet ramps when loading or unloading linen carts. Accuracy in delivering clean linen carts is required.
