Help

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Implement a variety of supportive wellness-based recreation therapy techniques including those related to assessment, treatment planning, and other activity therapies.
  • Respect all Veterans, their families, caregivers and communities by exhibiting sensitivity to their needs and individual differences including values, social backgrounds, and ethnicities.
  • Effectively use professional skill, objectivity, and insight to respond constructively to both positive and negative reactions.
  • Communicate confidence in the Veteran's ability and facilitates therapeutic process and progress.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and provides appropriate recognition for growth.
  • Assist in creating an active recovery environment, utilizing recreation therapy assessment and intervention practices.
  • Consider Recovery principles in all therapeutic steps: assessment, goal-identification, clinical interventions, evaluation of progress toward goals.
  • Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Conduct assessments consistent with his/her training and certification to obtain objective information about the veteran's interests, preferences, aptitudes, abilities, barriers, goals and clinical needs in recreation therapy. Communicate these findings with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Use professional knowledge and skills in the integration of recreation therapy into overall interdisciplinary team treatment plans.
  • Develop and provide effective clinical interventions that are consistent with the therapist's professional Scope of Practice, Standards of Care and Professional Ethics.
  • Provide the necessary and/or adapted equipment, materials, instruction, supplies, encouragement, and motivation to successfully engage with each patient in the therapeutic process.
  • Coordinate activities, outings, and special events for patient trips into local/regional communities as part of patient treatment plans.
  • Use proper judgment in determining specialized approaches, appropriate therapeutic modalities, and the appropriate interval of treatment in administering clinical interventions.
  • Document the treatment rendered and Veteran's progress in the electronic health record and discusses progress with the treatment team.
  • Adjust intervention strategies based on adjustments in the treatment plan.
  • Continue to further his/her professional growth and development through in-service lectures, on-line trainings, webinars, university course work, and attendance at seminars and workshops of professional organizations.
  • Provide trainings on various treatment techniques, provide on-the-job demonstrations of treatment interventions, and discuss and plan individual treatment.
  • Maintain knowledge of current recreation therapy practices and principles, medical terminology, human anatomy, physiology, life span development, and other related competencies.
  • Schedule and conduct evening and weekend programming to support facility-wide and/or departmental objectives.
  • Maintain departmental equipment, materials, resources, and space.
  • Participate in procurement of equipment and materials and may make recommendations for appropriate purchases.
  • Purchase supplies and materials for both of his/her assigned units as well as for the departmental needs while maintaining education and training and regulations associated with purchasing.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education.
    • A bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation. The degree must be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR,
    • A bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS). The degree must be approved by the NCTRC. If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived.
  • Certification. Applicants must be certified in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC.
  • English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English, as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
GRADE DETERMINATIONS: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:

GS-11.
  • Experience. At least one year of creditable experience at the next lower grade level.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
    • Ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment interventions to address the complexity of the diagnosis or disabilities and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further in-depth specific assessment of function and utilization of unconventional methods and techniques.
    • Knowledge to independently interpret provider referrals and consults; and apply all health and safety regulations to minimize and mitigate risks in the provision of patient care and the environment of care. VA Handbook 5005/111 June 7, 2019 PART II APPENDIX G60 II-G60-8.
    • Skill in effectively communicating and educating, in a clear and concise manner, with patients, families, caregivers, and other health care professionals to facilitate the interdisciplinary treatment process.
    • Skill in independently utilizing appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to appropriately provide direct patient care in areas such as, but not limited to recommendations for recreation therapy assistive devices, including fit and function.
    • Skill in independently applying evidence-based and best practice therapeutic techniques and interventions.
    • Knowledge of the principles and techniques in recreation therapy assessment and the treatment of recreation, leisure, and biopsychosocial functional deficits
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience working with Veterans in a Residential Treatment Program is preferred.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing (up to1 hour) or walking (up to 1 hour) for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending (up to .5 hours), reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting (15-44 pounds) and reposition patients; pushing or pulling heavy objects (up to .5 hours) - including Veterans in wheelchairs, gurneys; leading or directing physical activities/exercise. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity to perform intricate therapy procedures, as well as skill and ability in the therapist's respective discipline. Work may be outside and inside and you must be able to work alone and work closely with others. Position requires a valid driver's license and capacity to drive standard and oversized vehicles to transport patients in the community.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
