Duties

Help

  • Conducts, plans, and coordinates all clinical and administrative aspects of a full range of services associated with contemporary speech-language practice.
  • Clinical duties and responsibilities include direct patient care involving a full range of speech-language, cognitive, and swallowing evaluation and treatment services, including the screening, evaluation and treatment of motor speech disorders, voice disorders, cognitive impairments, language impairments, augmentative communication needs, cognitive assistive technology, swallowing impairments and counseling of communication, cognitive or swallowing impaired Veterans and their family.
  • The incumbent is responsible for planning, delivering, and monitoring the effectiveness and clinical outcomes of patient-centered treatment and rehabilitative services for patients with significant physical and psychological complicating conditions; including but not limited to, the method of communication rehabilitation and habituation; the method of cognitive rehabilitation and habituation; selection and training of communication and cognitive aids; programming of communication and cognitive aids; including computer generated speech devices, noncomputer generated speech devices, voice and speech amplifiers, electronic memory and organization devices, cognitive alerting devices, swallowing strategies, dysphagia rehabilitation, and selection of optimal nutrition for dysphagia patients independently. This includes placing orders for devices with prosthetics.
  • Incumbent designs patient-centered treatment plans to assist patient and caregivers to maximize and restore to the greatest extent possible physical and social functioning independently.
  • Incumbent serves as a consultant to other facility and community personnel involving the full range of difficult cases and is recognized as a knowledgeable expert on matters related to communication, cognitive and swallowing disorders.
  • Incumbent will complete all documentation in accordance with facility policy.
  • The incumbent will remain current with new developments in speech-language pathology and will maintain professional competency by reading professional journals and engaging in continuing education activities and professional learning experiences and by communicating with other professionals in the profession and related professions.
  • The incumbent will serve as an active member of an inter-disciplinary team working with a wide variety of specialists to meet the needs of Veterans.
  • The incumbent will participate in supervision and teaching speech-language pathology students during practicum rotations in the clinic.
  • The incumbent will pay special focus to patients in rural areas providing care virtually and in-person.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, possible rotating Weekends.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education:
    • A master's degree, or its equivalent, in speech-language pathology, communication disorders or a directly related field from an accredited college or university and one year of creditable experience (see paragraph 2.g.). OR
    • A doctoral degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders and sciences or a related field, from an accredited college or university.
  • Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations:
  • In addition to the basic requirements at the GS-11 level, completing one year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possessing a full, current and unrestricted license to practice speech-language pathology. Additionally, be able to demonstrate the following KSAs:
    • Skill in applying principles and techniques of diagnosis and treatment associated with contemporary speech-language pathology following evidence-based practice for adult patients exhibiting the full range of speech to the full range of patient populations.
    • Ability to assess the effectiveness of clinical outcomes and adapt clinical procedures and techniques to accommodate unique patient conditions.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 12. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is a GS 12.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate a government owned vehicle; walk up and down steps, minor lifting, carrying, bending, reaching.
