Duties

Help

  • Is responsible for completing assigned work independently or for working as a team member when assigned for large projects (renovations/construction) or special events
  • Coordinates and plans zone/area work to ensure work is carried out with the least disruption to patient care functions.
  • Performs visual examination of areas of the medical center by conducting daily inspections to determine the need for maintenance and repair work on systems, structures and equipment with the area/zone assigned.
  • Initiates electronic work orders to document identified and corrected deficiencies.
  • Plans the materials, tools and techniques needed for completing the work with little or no advice.
  • Responsible for knowing and/or judging the effects that alterations and modifications will have on the total building utility system.
  • Performs regularly scheduled preventive maintenance on a variety of kitchen, medical and non-medical, materials handling and other equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains non-motorized food carts, laundry carts, metal and wooden office/unit furniture, stretchers (manual and hydraulic), manual beds, patient lifts (manual and hydraulic), throughout the medical center.
  • Must be skilled in the use of hand and power tools of the plumbing trade such as pipe threaders and cutters, caulking irons, pipe wrenches, tapes, hacksaws, plumb tools, mercury gauges, hydrostatic pumps, dividers, closet augers, etc. Must be skilled in aligning pipes, valves and fittings to reassemble portions of systems requiring repairs and modifications; and skilled in the placement of braces and supports to control movement, expansion or contraction, and vibration of piping systems.
  • Makes pressure and operating tests on systems or equipment and assures proper circulation, flows, pressures, leak free installations and trouble-free operation.
  • Must possess the ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, operation, and maintenance manuals.
  • Must possess sufficient knowledge of electrical/electronic principles to differentiate types of problems from those of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic failures.
  • Knowledge of wood, metal, wood substitute materials and construction techniques; skill in construction techniques and operation of general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment to produce the requested finished product.
  • Responsible for selecting tools and determining methods and techniques to use in carrying out routine electrical maintenance and repairs.

Physical Requirements: The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may work from ladders on scaffolding or mechanical lifting devices. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning and moving of hands, arms, feet, legs and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts and handles parts and equipment weighting up to 50 pounds and may occasionally exceed 50 pounds, Physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials such as sheets of plywood or other building materials .
