Summary

This position is located in the Facilities Management/Environmental Management Service (EMS) of the VA Black Hill Health Care System, Fort Meade, SD.

The incumbent in this position will be responsible for operating diesel or gasoline powered vehicle with an automatic or 10-speed transmission and a hydraulic tail lift. The primary responsibilities of this position are to gather soiled linen carts and transport them to the laundry area and deliver clean linen carts to distribution points.

Help

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Operates gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles equipped with either an automatic or 10-speed transmission and hydraulic tail lift. This is a van type truck and has an approximate gross vehicle weight of 12,880 pounds and is capable of carrying loads up to 7,000 pounds.
  • Routinely maneuvers the vehicle in and around congested dock area.
  • Operates dock leveling devices and positions the truck to make maximum use of these devices.
  • Knows how to secure various types of cargo carried in vehicle.
  • Performs routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure.
  • Maintains cleanliness and professional appearance for both the in and outside of the vehicle.
  • Completes all maintenance service records to document activities.
  • Gathers, assembles, consolidates and lifts bags of soiled linen into wheeled carts.
  • Secures carts on the truck and transports to and from the laundry area.
  • Loads and unloads wheeled carts by hand.
  • Pushes carts to the laundry area.
  • Incumbent is required to work outside in all types of weather and weather-related conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full time; Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 2:30pm. May include weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/23/2022.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

DRIVER'S LICENSE: A valid state driver's license is required. Evidence is not required to be submitted with the application but will be obtained and a check of candidate's driving record will be completed during pre-employment and prior to firm offer.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must be free of physical handicaps that would adversely affect their ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe and proper manner. Incumbent must constantly stand, walk, turn, bend, and lift in the performance of assigned duties. Incumbent must be able to push and pull heavy cargos on and off the vehicle. Incumbent is required to work outside in all types of weather and weather-related conditions. Incumbent must drive, operate equipment and move cargo in extreme weather conditions such as cold, heat, rain, snow, ice, etc.

Performs duties indoors under favorable lighting at various temperatures. On occasion may be exposed to strong cleaning solutions. Incumbent performs duties and is exposed to dirt and disagreeable odors, seen and unseen bloodborne pathogens, medical waste in and outside of protective waste containers, medical waste sharps/needles in and outside of protective waste containers, noise from working with power equipment, seen and unseen contagious and possible infectious substances, urine, feces, puke, and large and small amounts of blood. Incumbent will be required to wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing their day to day duties. That PPE may include respirator, face mask, gloves, double gloves, gowns, shoe covers, hair covers, face shields, goggles, and eye protection

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
