This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.

The Student Nurse Technician (SNT) is responsible to the Designated Learning Officer (DLO) or designee. The DLO or Transition to Nursing Practice Coordinator coordinates the SNT placement.

The SNT will work under the direct supervision of a unit Registered Nurse Manager and a RN preceptor as they deliver safe care to assigned patients while developing clinical, interpersonal and critical thinking skills in the use of the nursing process. The SNT commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community. (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses).

The SNT delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies (VA Handbook 5005, Part 11, Appendix G6). The SNT works under the direct supervision of a designated preceptor with a goal of developing skills and judgment to utilize the nursing process in real situations. The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction. The novice brings principles and theory with limited application of critical thinking skills.

Performs other duties as assigned by RN preceptor.

Work Schedule: Minimum of 16 hours per month, maximum 40 hours per week. Rotating shifts with flexibility around school schedule days, evenings, and nights.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
