Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Help

The major duties of this position will include:

- Receives patients, explains methods of procedures, position patient and makes exposure necessary for the requested examination.

- Independently makes standard examinations. Confers with Radiologists to establish requirements of non-standard examinations, determines technical factors, and properly positions patients.

- Schedules patients for examinations. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and arranges patient priorities to accommodate them.

- Independently operate Diagnostic Imaging equipment.

- Performs a wide variety of complex radiologic examinations of patients to aid in the diagnosis of disease or injury.

- Follow mandated HIPPA guidelines.

- Checks the maintenance of daily supplies to avoid any slow-down to patient care.

- Assist in the preparation of procedure manuals.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 3:00pm to 11:00pm (On-Call and Holiday rotation required)

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
  • Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

GS-9 Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI):

In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, applicants must meet the grade requirements for 1 year equivalent to at least next lower grade level GS-8.

Experience: At least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in Federal Service, directly related to the position being filled, that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. Examples of qualifying experience include, but are not limited to: Reviews inventory of lab, medical, office, and computer supplies and informs the MRI Supervisor as needed to replenish, stock, and to receive supplies needed for daily operations. Checks all equipment and reports failures to the MRI Supervisor or other Radiology Supervisor as needed.

Candidates must also demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs':
  1. Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
  3. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
  4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
  5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
  6. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must have the ability to identify abnormal pathology for expected image results and make modifications to the instruments or imaging parameters to compensate for those unexpected results, or effectively communicate the incumbent's observation to the Radiologist to affect a change in the goals of the imaging examination.

The technologist works as a radiation worker in an environment where exposure to radiation is a known hazard. The effect of exposure to radiation on the individual or his/her generations is still not fully known. The incumbent is considered an occupational-exposed individual. Exposures in controlled areas must be kept at a level that would allow a technologist to stay in the area during an entire working month without exceeding their maximum single dose (MOP) wearing a dosimetry badge. When required, it is mandatory that the technologist wear protective devices and shield patients according to the Service's protocol.

The work requires positioning patients who are unconscious or disabled and requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done with the help of other employees, when doing special procedures he/she must wear a protective lead apron weighing approximately 5-9 pounds, which causes both weight strain and heating due to the wrap-around nature. These procedures require the incumbent to stand for long periods of time as well as stooping and squatting.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
