Summary

The Deputy Chief of Dental services performs a full range of administrative and diagnostic professional duties in connection with daily clinical operations and the evaluation of community care provider's treatment plans, recommendations, and radiographic images for commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. The candidate provides evaluations which are appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of the adult (ages 18-65), or older adult (ages 56-older) patients. This health care provider must consistently communicate and treat customers (patients, caregivers, community providers and all medical center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

Functions:

  • Relationships with management, co-workers, patients, and the public are consistently courteous, respectful, and cooperative in nature.
  • Employee will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organization's mission and goals and support performance measures
Leadership.
  • The incumbent provides leadership, direction and technical expertise in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the clinical functions of the Dental Clinic.
  • Provides clinical supervision and training of dental health care trainees as needed and during the absence of the primary supervisor.
  • Provides professional guidance to dental hygienists and dental laboratory technicians during the absence of their supervisor.
  • Acts as the lead team member of the dental service consult referral team.
  • Reviews and dispositions the dental service inpatient and dental service outpatients consults.
  • Performs as the lead delegate of authority for community care dental treatment plans and community care dental consults.
  • Assists in Joint Commission and other survey readiness.
  • Assists in ensuring that the National Patient Safety Goals are met.
Administrative/Clinical.
  • Evaluates patients clinically or via VA Video Connect (VVC) including the use of radiographs for the purpose of treatment plan approval.
  • When warranted, communicate with the community provider, patient and or caregiver regarding approved treatment and the appropriate sequence of care.
  • When warranted, communicate with the patient's assigned VA provider and the implant review board regarding the appropriateness of the community provider's treatment plan.
  • Assist the Program Support Assistant with entering community care consults by ensuring the assignment of the appropriate ADA treatment code(s), the patient's eligibility for dental care/community care, and the appropriate SEOC designation.
  • Review/approval of all entered community care consults ensuring the assignment of the appropriate ADA treatment code(s), the patient's eligibility for dental care/community care, and the appropriate SEOC designation.
  • Effectively communicate with the VA community care department regarding community provider requests. Confirming all treatment plans are uploaded in the Veteran Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) prior to acting on additional treatment request.
  • Maintain regular attendance in dental service and community care staff, meetings/huddles.
  • Conducts peer reviews when requested.
  • Conducts quarterly chart reviews.
  • Must be an active member of the dental service referral coordination team.
  • Complete all secure messages, PATS-R and telephone messages related to community care in accordance with the timeline set forth by the medical center.
  • Review all community care orthodontic treatment plans against the Office of Dentistry's guidelines and compile all submission requirements prior to forwarding for review.
  • Must maintain privileges/licensure as a dentist for the purpose of conducting patient evaluations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Dentist Basic Requirements

  • Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph 3g, this part
  • Education. A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
  • Residency. Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
  • License. Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
  • English. Dentists, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Preferred Experience: 4 years experience as a dentist, Knowledge of VA Community Care, experience reviewing, entering and approving community dental care consults. Experience in a leadership position.

Grade Determination. Leadership/Manager Positions.

Dentist leadership and management positions may be Section Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, Service Chiefs, VISN Lead Dentists, Service Line Managers, Central Office Program Positions, Chiefs of Staff, or Directors (i.e., medical center and Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN)). Dentists in leadership positions must demonstrate outstanding professional ability in the practice of dentistry or a dental specialty, and healthcare administration, as well as the ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These would include, but are not limited to dental practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality and performance improvement.

Physical Requirements: Long periods of sitting and staring at computer screens for the review, approval, and entering of consults and treatment plans. The dentist must also demonstrate average dexterity in manipulating dental instruments for the evaluation of patients. Work involves recurring exposure to the hazards of radiation and communicable diseases. The dentist uses face mask, gloves, gowns, and goggles during the performance of clinical evaluations.
